Breech baby -could I be doing anything else?

36 weeks +4, was scanned and breech on Thursday, trying to avoid rollercoaster that involves ECV/C-Section/breech birth and get baby turned.

So I had some reflexology yesterday (also last day of work - trying to do some relaxing) and got another booked on Weds; reckon I can go swimming 2-3 times before scheduled/proposed ECV (Thurs); got the gym ball out, lots of sitting on that; walking on all 4s - but think I need to spend a bit more time like it, feels quite uncomfortable though - not sure ; and got a moxibustion session booked on Monday (DH reckons waste of money, but I think worth a try...). Walked for quite a lot today, planning to continue doing walking each day and (in general) try and avoid sitting on the sofa.

Am I missing anything? Don't think I fancy chiro for Webster's as I have a dodgy back and pelvis anyway and don't want to make it bad as I'm not currently in pain. But am serious to try and avoid above mentioned!!

I had an ECV with my DD at 37 weeks.....HORRENDOUS!!!!! I eventually tried for a vaginal breech birth but after 33 hrs of labour it ended in a section.

Moxibustion worked for my friend, i wrote it off as i thought it sounded ludicrous but I defiinately try it if i had a breech baby again. Its worth the money to avoid an horrible labour and then a section!

Good luck XX

DC6 was breech at 37 weeks. I was told to go upside down, head on floor (facing outwards) bum on sofa, feet waving in the air. I was supposed to stay like it for 30 minutes a night, but first night 20 minutes was my limit, but DS turned that evening. Don't do it if you are alone in the house, I needed DH to help me get upright again. Its not pleasant, but probably the least unpleasant of the options I looked into. Its also free, so worth a try before anything else.

Have you thought of trying a HypnoBirthing Practioner. They are trained to help your baby turn - research shows it to be very effective:

Thanks for your messages.

positive attitude I didn't realise it was facing outwards - will try (on an empty stomach, I think!).

Hadn't thought of hypnobirthing, will look into that if the others aren't successful.

Only problem is, I have no idea where baby is (can never tell) and when.....clearly if it turns and I carry on with these attempts, I could make it turn again?! Any ideas on how I should deal with this? Or would I feel that sort of turn and definitely know?!

My yoga teacher would say get on all fours over the pregnancy ball if needs be, the more you are in this position the more room you give the baby to move.

I hope it works! Ive seen them trying to turn the baby on tv and it doesnt look pretty. good luck!

Try the spinning babies website.

Report
Pootletrinket · 19/03/2011 19:32

Thanks - greenzebra can you describe where that would be, do you mean hips over the ball, arms on the floor? Otherwise (tried it earlier) feels like I'm squishing it!!!!

Reflexology worked for me (but it was my third baby so lots of room!)

Good luck.

Spinningbabies was useful, as I think swimming helped.

(btw I DIDN'T know when it turned - went in for the ECV and it just had!)

The ECV turned the little bugger round in the end.

Oh... You'll know if it turns!! It isn't sore, but one hell of a movement all over!

I spent most evening on all 4s and also kneeling behind the Swiss ball with elbows on it (more comfy!). Put something soft under your knees.

Worked for me at 33 wks...

have the ball in front of you with your arms over it, so your resting your chest on the ball, and your knees are on the floor. So its like a doggy position but the ball is your arms. Im like this most nights in front of the telly, I often rock side to side on it as well its feels really comfy to me, it takes so much pressure off the back as well.
I really think I might marry my pregnancy ball!

LOL!!! Thanks all. Baby was right way at 34 weeks (DC2) so am hoping little blighter will behave at some point! Just spent 20 mins with head on floor, bum on sofa (you're right, not much fun!), felt a couple of big-ish turns, but definitely not all the way. Who knows, fingers crossed!

Thanks - quick bite of pasta then go hug that ball!

I think I must be very, ahem, slack...

Thing is, he was moving so much (breech one visit, transverse the next, extended breech, then head down) that I just got used to it.

Strange thing is, once he was out, and a bit mobile in his cot, he would do the same - be head one end one time you check on him at night, then lying horizontally across the cot, then head the other end... obviously given birth to an acrobat...

Pootletrinket · 19/03/2011 21:41

I think so, too - we've had cephalic, transverse, cephalic, breech at 2 week intervals.

Feeling a bit achey in the pubic area, could that be because I've done the upside down thing, sitting on the ball, hugging the ball all in one evening?!?

Ohh maybe its moved! This happened to someone in the yoga class the other week, she came beacuse her baby was breech and within the hour she said she felt the baby move and its been in the right position ever since, shes got 4 weeks to go.

And just to add, please don't feel like it's your fault for not doing enough if it doesn't turn - some of them just don't! My baby has been breech since Christmas and believe me I've tried everything - hanging upside down, gym balls, swimming, handstands in the swimming pool, moxibustion... I also had an ECV that didn't work as the baby just couldn't be moved. I really really didn't want a cs either but have accepted that this is the way things have to be. But on a positive note my baby has never changed position, so the fact that yours obviously still can is really encouraging. Something that I don't think's been mentioned yet but that made mine move more than normal was massaging my tummy at nighttime while lying with my hips raised. And apart from anything else it kind of made me feel closer to the baby - I'd got to the point where all I could think about was turning the poor thing round....!

Hi, sorry don't know what ECV stands for, but DC2 was breech at 38 weeks - bum firmly wedged in. I went to my local Shiatsu practitioner who massaged points on my toes and then showed my DH how to do it which he did on and off that night.

Then went into hospital and the doctor turned him round manually by external manipulation. DH then continued to do the toe massage and he was born right way round at 39 weeks in a planned homebirth.

BTW When I had the toe massage that night it felt like there was a washing machine in my tummy which was obviously him trying to turn.

swing your hips a lot. do cat and cow yoga posture. inversions (aka shoulder stand) are good as well, but only do them if you are comfortable... here is some more info

Thanks - did handstands in the pool yesterday and swimming, but blighter was asleep - started moving again once I was dry and dressed Biscuit!!

Had first moxi treatment with acupuncture, he was lovely, has sent me home with sticks for DH to burn (and told me about good massage point to help during labour -gall bladder 21 on shoulder!). On the drive home, some more biggish movements but none that were 'major'.

Am feeling much better than I was; trying to get turned before Thurs, but if I don't ,it might still and if it doesn't, I might consider breech vaginal birth (my local hospital will support this, they say - not much else, but this!)
