jewish here - but don't know enough hebrew to translate it. it seems a little odd to me having a tattoo in hebrew as the jewish faith prohibits tattoos!

what is your DH's name? not all sounds have equivalents in hebrew.

i'd ask the tattoist to come up with a symbol that could say all that rather than have it in another language.

Neither Hindi or Hebrew I'm afraid so no idea how reliable this is :
www.my-hebrew-name.com/names.cgi?name=christ&gender=m&match=1&page=0&orig_name=christian

I typed in "Christian" and they came up with the name Mashiach which apparently looks like this in Hebrew letters:

www.my-hebrew-name.com/view.cgi?image=mashiach.gif&name=christopher&id=4578

You might want to run it past someone who knows first though

Actually I just tried that with dd's name and it came up with 6 different names the last one a literal spelling of her name I think, so perhaps it wasn't quite right for Christian!

If you have a personal connection to Hindi, that seems OK. To appropriate Hebrew for your tattoo because you have some idiosyncratic fantasy about it being 'spiritual' would be very tacky IMO, given that as TotalChaos points out Jews don't go in for tattoos.

if you want something old and spiritual you are gettign a bit confused I think! hindi script is devangari - which isn't even that old. It developed out of the old sanskrit script irrc.

I can read/write gujarati a bit - which using a font very similar to hindi, but I'm hopeless at the language.

Thats a cool web site , Im jewish , but am rubbish with hebrew! Need someone to check it whos an expert !

Think the hindi symbols might be the way to go as its part of your ancestory. Wonder if theres a similar website like the one above for that.

Presumably the script I'm writing in now is also pretty old? Seems odd to want to express something very meaningful for you in a language/script that is not meaningful for you.

I think given the cultural faith taboo on tattos having one in Hebrew might be a little insensitive.

Does not david beckham have Eastern Orient charcters/script on himself for something or other?

Actually I'm thinking now what the online site threw up for Christian was probably a version of Messiah. At the Jewish museum here they have a computer where you can type in your name and you get the literal spelling of it in Hebrew which is what you're after I think not some equivalent name. It works for dd's name and also for mine but maybe there is no "chr" sound?

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 11/12/2007 11:37

david beckham has his wife's name in hindi tattooed on him - spelled wrong!

malfoy · 11/12/2007 11:38

I think Christian would be ok in hebrew -letter wise. will go & find book & post link.

would you want it from right to left? ie hebrew is written "backwards" & generally without vowels so you would have:

n-t-s-r-c (but with hebrew letters obviously!)

have to say it does seem weird.

apologies if i don't make sense.

What I do know , is that there is sometimes no literal spelling in Hebrew for some names. Hence the substitute.

Report
Curmudgeonlett · 11/12/2007 11:39

Mashiach means Messiah .. you do not want to brand yourself with the word messiah
