3 yr olds - when did yours drop afternoon nap and stop wearing nappies at night?

My DS has just turned 3 and still takes a late morning or early afternoon nap of around an hour. He finds it difficult to get through the day without it. I'm wondering how much longer he might need a nap for?

Also he wears nappy pants at night but am wondering when to start trying without them and "lifting" him at 10.30pm to put him opn the loo - any tips?

dd1 3.5 still has a short nap after nursery/preschool, but can do most days without one.
No point in taking them out of nappies at night time until they're dry anyway imo. DD1 dry through the night now and will tend to wake up and tell me if she needs to go, but ime lots of children do it much older.

Ds2 turned 3 about a month ago - he still has a nap between half an hour to an hour and a half every 2 or 3 days. Refuses to go to bed, but will doze off if we're in the car, he's in the pushchair or on the sofa! Ds1 dropped his daytime nap around this time.

Ds2 is in night-time pull ups - will not stop using them until he is consistently dry in the mornings. Ds1 is 6 next month and is also still in pull ups at night. We try every so often to go without, but he's just not ready.

So, in a nutshell - they're all different!

Mine (now 3.5) potty trained himself at 2.5 and was suddenly dry during the day and night. I don't know how!

He naps maybe once a week for an hour but has 'rest time' every day for 90 minutes when he has to stay in his room and play quietly in the hope he will fall asleep. He never does, he just takes all his clothes off and throws underpants around his room. Or, much more amusingly, puts on every single pair of pants that he owns.

In fact, he is naked right now, except for a homemade paper crown, silver mardi gras beads and a sparkly magic wand. I think I might have to get my camera.

DS just 3 hasnt had a nap for nearly a year although he does sleep on the sofa on occassions.

Hes still in pull ups at night, not even going to attempt to change that yet as hes only just potty trained as it is.

Dd2 (3 last week) dropped her nap 6 months ago (unless we are out in the car), she's still in Nappies.

ds 3 in may has been without nappies at night since before xmas. It helped him with potty training hugely when he was not in a nappy at all. But I still like him to have a nap otherwise he is a little ball of stroppiness. About an hr is the norm for him.

DD stopped naps at about 1.6

She was potty trained at 2.8. I took off nighttime nappy about a week later. She peed the bed a few times then got the hang of it, and has been dry day & night ever since.

I'd say go for it and don't 'lift' him to start with. Give him a chance to learn to hold his pee through the night.

DD1 is 3.2yrs and she potty trained day and night week after she was 2. She still has an afternoone nap for 30mins at least 3 afternoons a week.

ds1 is 4, he still crashed out for a full 2hours early afternoon till he was 3 and a bit. He was out of nappies day at 2.5 and night a few weeks later.
ds2 is 2.10, he has never really napped, can go 8am till 9pm without hardly even shutting his eyes. Out of nappies day at just 2 yo, night at the same time as he refused to wear nappies and if we sneaked one on after he'd gone to sleep, he would scream the house down in the early hours, trying to get it off. He is not quite dry at night though so we lift him at 11pm when we go to bed.

I would rather have not started lifting ds2 but he would pull a nappy off half asleep and the constant wet beds for practically months was just too much. I thought he'd be like ds1 and just get the hang of not wearing nappies at all after a few weeks, but they are all different.

Oh it's good to see that there are some
3 yr olds who still nap - I was beginning to think mine was just plain weird for still needing one.

DS 3.2 naps every afternoon for an hour.
Potty trained at 2.6 yrs - dry at night about 2 weeks after being dry during the day. I just think they do it when they are ready, some early, some later.

Afternoon naps stopped at about 21 months unfortunately, nappies at night stopped at 4.5 yrs (ds's defence is he has delayed gross motor skills!).

Seems from this thread you either get a straightforward potty trainer who naps until nearly 3 at least. Or you get one who never sleeps and is very late to potty train. (With apologies to my lovely DS, am slightly at the ones who have late sleepers and early trainers)

FWIW, DS is 3.3, hasn't had a nap for nearly 18 months, but is still not fully potty trained in the daytime. We are not even going for nighttime yet.

Ds had nap of 2 hours until not long after his 3rd b'day. He potty trained easily on the first attempt at 2y4m and was dry at nights at 2y8m.

Dd is 2.5, potty trained herself (after 3 half hearted failed attempts) also at 2y4m. Still wet at nights and THANKFULLY still has a 2 hour nap...long may that continue!!

My DS still has the occasional nap at 3.7 but at 2 and half he stopped willingly going up to his room, so had quiet time in front of a dvd when he always fell asleep for 2 hours. This just steadily got less and less as in 2 or 3 a week instead of every day. He decided himself to stop wearing nappies at 3.4 and had an accident a couple of times a week for about a fortnight and then suddenly went dry! he would never be lifted though so just made sure last drink was half an hour before bed time wee and now accident quite rare

ds1 was never sleeps and difficult to potty train lol. (at 7 he uses an enuresis alarm in an attempt to save me from washing bed sheets every day. and actually, still pretty ropy during the day)

dd1 - no naps, dry at 8 (with help of enuresis alarm)

dd2 - naps and dry day and o'night at 2.6 (oh and she has cerebral palsy lol - i expected an enormously long drawn out toilet training process there...)

go figure.

dd and her best friend were 3 in February.

Dd was potty trained last August to start nursery in Sept and had a number of dry nights in succession just before Christmas so has been nappiless at night since then. I never lifted her - she just doesn't wee during the night at all! Weirdo!

She gave up daytime naps last summer - I think little need for sleep is in her genes. My dh and I are real night owls.

Dd's best friend potty trained herself a few months before my dd and is still wearing nappies at night. She drinks a lot more on a daily basis than my dd and I do think that is relevant.

She has just given up daytime naps - she refuses to go to bed but often falls asleep downstairs during the day.
