I feel uncomfortable using Elasoplast on a patient with black skin.

Is it racist ?

Yes plasters are racist.

Shakey1500 · 28/06/2012 23:20

What?? Am I missing something?? Plasters can be racist? Fuckers.

sc2987 · 28/06/2012 23:20

Yes. Maybe they should all be bright colours. Or you could get a brown permanent marker and colour some in beforehand :p

recall · 28/06/2012 23:21

I have started to use clear ones now

nailak, don't be so quick to pour scorn, eh?

Of course it's racist that plasters are a default "white skin" colour. They are made that colour so that they blend into white skin. They do not blend into a lot of other skin colours.

Similar arguments can be made when that off-white colour is referred to as "nude" or "flesh".

The ridiculousness is talked about here

BetterChoicesChair · 28/06/2012 23:22

They are racist! You're totally right! Make a point of buying the primary-coloured ones next time.

recall · 28/06/2012 23:22

well, they are "skin" coloured, but they are not

OP posts:
BetterChoicesChair · 28/06/2012 23:23

...'tis just like the "flesh" coloured crayons that have since been named something else.

fireice · 28/06/2012 23:24

Is elastoplast different colours in different countries depending on the predominant ethnicity?

NoComet · 28/06/2012 23:25

I guess some are trying to blend with white skin, but Elastoplast?

If I was that funny pink colour I would be worried!

thisisyesterday · 28/06/2012 23:25

wow. i'd never even thought about it til now, but you're right...

shattereddreams · 28/06/2012 23:28

Tights are in this same racist category!

AnyFuleKno · 28/06/2012 23:28

If anyone's skin is the same colour as Elastoplast they should be fucking worried

recall · 28/06/2012 23:28

starballbunny it does not blend with black skin, it is a funny pink colour !

OP posts:
fireice · 28/06/2012 23:29

Especially the blue stuff Grin

yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:29

Well, there are a greater variety of colours of tights.

Probably still not enough, but there are some.

It amazes me that people think this is a non-issue. It's only in the last couple of years that there's been a better selection of make-up colours Asian/black women.

yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:30

Wow, can people really not see that Elastoplast is coloured that way so that it, on some level, blends into white skin?

saladcravings · 28/06/2012 23:31

Most plasters look wierd on me - I'm very pale skinned, they are much too dark. Maybe in the uk where the majority of people are white it's just a business decision to cater to the largest number of consumers? Like most makeup brands in this country offering far more options for white skin, and just a few for black.

recall · 28/06/2012 23:31

well I think it is designed to be skin coloured

OP posts:
saladcravings · 28/06/2012 23:32

After all, they just want to make as much profit with as little outlay as possible.

yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:32

Yes, there's definitely no other ways that non-white people are discriminated against in this country, so obviously this isn't a thing either.

Hmm
yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:33

so saladcravings it's ok for companies to exclude people based on their race because they are just out to make a profit.

Well, ok, then.

thisisyesterday · 28/06/2012 23:35

are there more white people in the uk?

that's a genuine question because i (shockingly) don't know.
i'd have thought that there must be as many people with other skin colours surely?

i've never seen plasters that are darker to blend in with other skin tones... does anyone even make them? i bet they don't

trixymalixy · 28/06/2012 23:35

I bought plasters in Italy and they were clearly for a more olive skin tone than those you can buy in Britain.
