we are discussing emigrating to Vancouver

Can anyone give us some practical info? I have changed name to protect the innocent! DH is about to lose his job and I am self employed. We are getting a bit fed up with the UK and want a better life for DS. He is 2.5 . How long does the process take? Do they have nurseries in Canada? What is the education system like? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

No, we emigrated to Toronto from Germany when I was 12, but I thought since I live in the area I could find links for you to Immigration etc, and give you opinions on where are nice places to live...

If you are in engineering/construction, think carefully, projects are being cancelled here left and right. We will find out in a couple of weeks if we still have jobs. (in Montreal)

we lived in Vancouver, and it was the best 18 months of my life.

DH has applied for a job in Kelowna, but it's very, very competitive, he's fairly pessimistic . He's an interventional cardiologist (angioplasty) and he just won't 'downgrade' to general cardiology. Seems a bit selfish IMO,considering the career sacrifices I've made for him and the kids, but there you go.

PR visas (without a job offer) can take 2 years to process now I hear

I would guess so. But, like everywhere else, most companies prefer to give jobs to Canadians rather than foreigners (sorry, offensive term, I know) and hassling with visas.
