a single bed which turns into a double

Does anyone know where I can buy such a thing? I am looking for the double bed to be that - i.e. not two mattresses at different heights. Thanks very much.

You can get them with a trundle underneath that then pops up to be same height.

We have the IKEA Hemnes day bed - it's sturdy, attractive and comfortable. It pulls out to a double bed.

We did look at beds with trundle beds under - the trundle bed has folding legs, and stows away under the single - you can put the two together to be a double, or have them as two singles.

There's an IKEA day bed that does that..off to google.... The Hemnes daybed. DD has it and it seems comfortable as a single and pulls out into a big double. Two mattresses but same height

I tried out loads of options but eventually chose the Hypnos guest bed. Super comfy and so handy with the trundle that can be also raised up to make a super sized double. Dd sleeps great on it and I hope it will last years.

The advantage of the day beds with a trundle bed underneath is you get a double bed that is the width of 2 single beds (i.e. wider than a double). The disadvantage is that you have 2 single mattresses together which means there's a join in the middle which isn't the comfiest thing in the world if you roll over in the middle of the night. If it's just for occasional use it's great though. I had one for a couple of years before I moved out of my parents house in my early 20s. It meant that it could turn into a double for when my bf stayed or 2 singles if I had a friend crashing.

We have hemnes beds in both DC's rooms. They are fab.

The IKEA Hemnes bed has the same disadvantage (two mattresses), StylishDuck - we got over that by putting one double mattress protector over the two mattresses.

I didn't think of that SDTG. Does a double mattress protector fit over 2 single mattresses? I would have thought it wouldn't be wide enough.

2 single mattresses are normally the same width as a kingsize mattress unless they are narrow 2'6" singles

We found one that fitted, StylishDuck - we might get a mattress topper (because it would be a bit thicker) but ds1, who used the room last, said that it was comfortable enough with the mattress protector.

Sorry if this is a silly question about the IKEA Hemnes Daybed - where do you store the 2nd mattress? Is it a choice of trundle/2nd bed or the drawers? Can't see how you could have the drawers (as shown on the website) and the trundle/2nd bed?

We have one of those IKEA day beds. They are a truly brilliant design and invention. They look very nice, like a wooden sofa, and have masses of storage. On the other hand the mattresses are quite thin so they are not especially comfortable.

You can also get real, traditional single beds with another single bed underneath that can pops up from underneath. We have one of these too.
These have real bed mattresses on them so are more comfortable. There are no storage drawers, but on the other hand you can squash a spare duvet and pillow between the two on the lower bed when it is being stored underneath, like a sandwich filling. I think I have seen these at John Lewis. They are more expensive than the IKEA Hemnes ones.

Re the Hemnes day bed, the drawers are always available regardless of whether it's in single or double mode.

The mattresses are quite thin. We have bought more expensive mattresses to go on it. But as these are thicker, the spare on does have to be stored elsewhere while the bed is in single mode, because stacking the mattresses would make the bed bizarrely high.

Sorry, stupid question number 2 then - is the mechanism for the 2nd bed behind / underneath the drawers? Are the drawers built into the 2nd bed part?

Yes, the drawers are under the second bed, if you see what I mean.

When you push that in you push in the whole thing including the drawers. The slats of the second bed sort of fit in between the slots of the first.

It's very clever. It does take a while to put together - recommend an electric screw driver.
