Pasta pasta and more pasta! Tea, coffee, juice, cornflakes, uHT milk. Jacket potatoes. Tin of soup, beans. Biscuits, crisps. Unless you know what the fridge situation is don't go for anything perishable.

Thank you titchy. I might get him one of those Kelloggs selection boxes of cereal. Oh yes, biscuits.

I have known him since he was about 8.

Def lots of stuff to add to boiling water. First week he isn't going to cook. Maybe a few of those porridge thingy tubs you add water to for a decent breakfast after a big night! I'd go for a few simple quick fixes for first week plus a student cook book and a giftcard for his nearest supermarket.

Bagels. Bit random but they keep for longer than bread. Or any of those individually wrapped brioche or pains au chocolat that Aldi do. Cans of coke.

Marker pen for any food he has to put in a shared fridge.

There are also pot rice, pot cous cous, pot pasta and so forth. Harvest crunch bars keep me going.

Bottle of wine him to share with new housemates the first night.

Cake - ditto

My mum made her gorgeous choc cake. Everytime she came to visit I had loads of people asking if she was bringing another one!

My 15 year old son would currently live with:

Sandwich press
Non stick pan

Pasta
Cheese sauce
Big salami sausage
Cheese
ASDA tomato pizza topper
Fruit
Weetabix

I would get the non perishables from that list and leave him to but the rest
