HELP where can i sell baby clothes

griffintribe · 03/09/2006 21:06

Hi everyone

I am trying to set up a business selling baby clothing with funny slogans printed on the front (see ad in small business section).

I am doing them mail order and i have tried a few craft fairs. But it seems to be mostly old people who go to craft fairs and not young parents.

Has anyone any ideas about where and how i can show people my work because the clothing is of good quality and people are liking my designs its just how to get people to see them

Any advice would be great

Thanks

Can you demo at mother & toddler groups? I used to go to one where almost every week we had someone talking about or selling something?

I am helping s-i-l do a sale, like an NCT - Nearly new sale, next sat.
Might that be a ggod place for you ?

I go to a tumble -tots group - loads of adverts there - that could be really good for you.

Ask if local nurseries will put up an advert/poster for you?
Find out if its possible to get a leaflet put into the packs that midwives/hospitals give you (they often include local info, ads for baby goods suppliers etc)

Thanks everyone for replying.

I already have an ad on this site, sent posters out to local nursey's and have an ad in Mother and Baby magazine.

I have a one year old daughter and need Little Lil Babywear to work out so i can stay at home with her.

Whenever people have seen the designs and clothing they have thought how good they are, its just finding mothers to buy them

What about a shop on ebay?

Report
griffintribe · 04/09/2006 15:01

Hi

I have tried a shop on e-bay but they didn't sell very well. i think people on e bay are looking for a bargin and want things too cheaply.
I am only asking £5.99 for the clothes, which i dont think is too expensive.
There are others companies selling the same sort of clothing and they all ask £12.99 for a t shirt, which is loads of money

i set up a website using www.mrsite.co.uk, i found it really stright forward, it took time but i am pleased with the result...if i do say so myself (www.usborne4u.co.uk) its £35 that includes the name, hosting and wizrd designer thingy, lol.

you can have a shopping basket on there and there are other features that are easy to link in. It's great to have a site which i can update as and when i plese and that i know hasn't cost me a fortune.

Try other forums - there's a work from home section on netmums where you could put a bit about your company. Read the rules first, but they've just started a section for ads and reps that you could post on. Worth a try...
Have you tried going to local independent baby shops and childrenswear shops to see if they would stock your products? You'd have to give them trade terms so they get a decent mark up, but it could be a way to get your product 'known' iyswim.
How is the ad in Mother and Baby going for you? They phoned me the other day, but I can't afford the rates at the mo.
Have you sent press releases to all the baby mags? Someone may pick up on your story and give you some free publicity.(try to send a sample if you can)

How long did you try on e-bay? I think £5.99 for a new slogan t'shirt is a reasonable price!

Did you try over the summer holiday period - I did;nt bother listing anything then as no one is there to look!

Try leaving piles of flyers with anyone who will take them and makesure they include a web address where they can view your stuff!

Also try and get on stalls at school fetes etc

I was on e bay for about three months and even had a e-bay shop.
Hardly anything sold and i spent a fortune on e bay fees.
I dont understand why because i had a stall at a family fun day last weekend and people were coming up the stall and laughing out loud at my slogans and holding them up to show other people.
Its difficult finding fun day fetes and fairs that children go to

How about a stand at local mums and toddler groups. They'll all be starting again. When DD and I went to mums and toddlers there were frequent visits from people selling things, mainly like Usborne etc - but they always got lots of interest. Your Health Visitor should be able to give you details fo groups in your area.
Also why not do parties?

Thanks for letting me know about the mother&baby mag - they quoted me £270 for a one off ad (gulp!) and I knew I'd never recoup that sort of money.
Do you have a local paper that you could get in touch with? I had a little write up in the business section after sending an email to our local paper. It all helps!

The advert is for three months so they do a small discount. What business do you have?

I must admit I nearly fainted at the one off price!
I make and sell the Baby Feed Wheel and Baby Medicine Wheels small business ads and like you, only started the business this year, so I can totally relate!!
