Spotty hands?

Does anyone know what this is? My dd, 22m, seems perfectly well but has spots on her hands that look like little zits or blisters. Not many, perhaps half-a-dozen on one hand and 2 or 3 on the other. AFAIK they came up overnight.

It's ds's birthday party tomorrow - should I panic?

I hate to say this, but there is apparently a round of foot, hand and mouth going round which is highly contagious amongst birth to 3 yrs. Don't know much about it, but a toddler at one of my daughter's playgroups has got it. Apparently you get little spots on the feet, hands and ulcers in the mouth.

Just had a look under patient.co.uk, and it is listed under hand foot and mouth. You may want to look to see if she has any other of the symptoms. Apparently its not painful or serious, but it is infectious.

Oh sh*t.

When I last checked (before putting her down for her nap) she didn't have any spots anywhere else on her body, or in her mouth.

I wonder if I can get my sister to take dd out for the day tomorrow? Neither of them would be keen on missing the party, but it would be bettter than canceling it (especially if the spots cleared up on Sunday! ) Would that be ok, or should I quarantine the household?

it is very infectious.
The next thing is to watch out for blisters inside her mouth. If she gets these tonight you should warn parents of kids invited to your ds's birthday.

Your dd may feel underthe weather for a few days and then the blisters dry up and eventually go down.

It's all rather tiresome

Of course, it may not be that. Have you phone NHS direct - they may be able to advise on what else it could be. They could also tell you if you need to quarantine!

I've just had a lookat patient.co.uk (thanks, michellep) and I see that there's no point just isolating dd, as the rest of the family might already be infectious. But TBH, I don't think it is HFaM because she has none of the other symptoms.

hate to rain on your parade PC, but we noticed spots on hands with DS1 when he had it then that night he got out of bed saying his mouth hurt inside and when we shone a torch inside he had six or seven blisters, it comes up really quickly

Do the spots on her hands look flat and whitish?

No, they look like pinky-red pimples, some of them have creamy blisters on top.

Try phoning NHS Direct though - it may be something she's touched and perhaps allergic to or anything. They should be able to tell you by describing the spots.

And I'm in real do-da if I do have to cancel, as I have no way of getting in touch with the children invited from ds's nursery.

you know what, you should whizz her to the doc just to be sure, it's pointless me worrying you or trying to diagnose on here, I now realise.

Do you have an out of hours Gp facility at the hospital if you can't get to the surgery? We could use the CamiDoc service at the Whittington but I can't remember if you fall within that catchment.

my ds1 had it earlier this year and it ain't called hand foot and mouth disease for nothing. I'd never heard of it before

What on earth is molluscum?

Molluscum is a viral infection, common in pre-school children. Waxy, wart-like spots (white, pink or red), often with a central dip like a yew berry or a creamy head. Sometimes itchy, sometimes become red and inflamed, usually the child is otherwise perfectly well and can go to nursery/school. It goes away on its own.

Sounds like hand foot and mouth. See my thread..(I'll bump it up for you). Very contagious, but if the kids coming to the party are from her nursery they would have already been exposed to it, so not worth cancelling the party. My dd has it at the moment, but she didn't get the spots, just the awful awful mouth ulcers (we've had two nights of inconsolable crying).

I think that although hand foot and mouth spots look the same as chicken pox spots, the main difference is that chicken pox almost never starts on the hands and feet , but rather on the torso....so if there are no spots elsewhere, it's probably not chicken pox.

Ds has had c.pox and HFandM so should be immune if you want him to come over and cheer up ds tomorrow (assuming it's one of them).
