Does anyone feel the cold so badly that they really worry about it? I can wear thermal underwear and several layers of clothing & still feel feel icy cold. Could there be an underlying health problem?

Sorry, no advice but hoping someone can help. Does moving around help you to warm up? Probably worth seeing your GP

Have you had your thyroid checked?

former I'm the same.can have 4 or 5 layers on, Hot water bottle and still feel cold. I've had tests and nothing showed up.is it a recent thing with you, any triggers you can think of? are you generally well otherwise? would be worth getting checked out.

Raynaud's? Do your fingers go blue? Unfortunately not much you can do apart from wrap up warm!

Report
Guyropes · 31/01/2015 21:48

I was going to say raynauds too, worth looking at on Wikipedia

How active are you?

I'm freezing too, but I suspect it would be a lot better if I got back on my bike!

Feeling cold has always been an issue for me. Recently I started hypnotherapy to try to fix it. No definite results yet but I am positive.

Another vote for thyroid testing. I don't think it's coincidence that the first inter we were in credit on fuel was the first winter my thyroid was properly treated.

Are you underweight, or have you lost weight recently?

Hi everyone.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I've had my thyroid checked frequently in the past because of other symptoms, not just the cold feeling. It's always been ok, although one doctor did say it could be borderline. The problem has become much worse since the menopause.
Do any of you feel cold shivers especially down your legs even when you're wearing far more clothes than anyone else

I feel the cold (typing in gloves, often wear a hat indoors, 3 pairs of PJs to bed under 3 big duvets).
How much exercise do you get?

Report
gormenghast · 02/02/2015 22:36

Hi. Gosh lljk I think you wear more clothes than I do. Yes I do get plenty of exercise. I walk my dog briskly twice a day. You say you wear several pairs of pyjamas. What do you wear when you go out in the cold weather? I wear thermal vests and long thermal pants under my jeans plus jumpers, a heavyweight coat, hat, scarf and gloves. I see some people with little lightweight jackets and little else and I worry that as I get older I might die of hypothermia.

Is your normal temperature lower than average? Some people are just a bit more cold blooded than average. DD for example has a normal temp of about 36.4 and she often feels cold to touch (I don't know if she IS cold, she can't talk yet, but we keep her rugged up).

Report
gormenghast · 03/02/2015 18:52

I haven't thought of that. I'll take my temperature.

what did your temp say? What could you do about it, anyway?

In cold weather I am walking fast or in the car so I only need hat+full gloves+a jacket usually on top of indoor wear. Sometimes I have leggings on under jeans.

Lots of Ice on the roads & I've seen people out in shorts the last 2 days. Shock

I do and have very poor circulation and low blood pressure. I have a friend who also has low blood pressure and she also really feels the cold.

Report
gormenghast · 05/02/2015 20:56

Yes I do have low blood pressure. It's strange, because doctors disregard low blood pressure, although funnily enough I've had two operations put back until the operating theatre staff wanted my blood pressure to be higher before they anaesthetised me. Do any of you who have low blood pressure and who also suffer from the cold,, feel depressed as well.

just sounds like thyroid to me. keep getting tests done, ask for an antibodies test as well. tsh should be under 2

I felt like you do about 5 years before my thyroid went under enough to get treated. With hindsight I was definitely hypothyroid. Keep going back to your gp and pushing for tests and treatment. In my experience the ranges don't tally up with symptoms and many thyroid groups believe doctors should medicate earlier.

Thanks everyone. I have made an appointment with the surgery for next week. I must admit I'm getting to dread winter, because even when I'm wrapped up to the gills my body and legs can feel ice cold.
One of the worse things (and I don't know whether anyone else experiences this) is the incredulity expressed by other people when I say that I'm really cold. When I touch them they say how icey I am. My family groan when I turn up the heating, but often the only way to get warm is to have an outside source of heat rather than more clothes

There's a long list of other thyroid problem symptoms which I don't have the slightest of (like weight gain and dry skin etc.)
I am going to try iodine, though, lots reasons why my diet might be deficient, anyway.

Report
gormenghast · 08/02/2015 18:56

I have the weight gain, but not the dry skin. You don't need to have all the symptoms though to have hypothyroidism

Hi op.
I have always been a cold person.
My lips used to go blue as a child.
Now I have to wear so many layers and keep active to be warm.
As you can see from my username I'm not keen on winter.
My nails on my hand quite often turn blue even when I'm inside.

Hi op. I too am a cold person. I have been known to sleep with a massive jumper and electric blanket on and STILL be cold?!! Annoyingly DP is an excessively warm person. He spends life turning off the heating and opening the windows and me vice versa! Really rather incompatible!!

I have a very low blood pressure. I am constantly cold and always have cold hands and feet. I also get blue/purple lips when really cold. Add on top of that fainting spells. Perfectly fine health wise just have freakishly low blood pressure!
