General health

Spots/ulcers on tongue - both kids. Ideas?

DS (almost 5) & DD (18months) have both had colds and mildly upset stomachs over the past 2 weeks.

At the weekend I noticed dd had a couple of tiny blister/ulcer type spots on the tip of her tongue but they are gone now.

Yesterday ds said his tongue hurt & I could see a couple of spots. Today his tongue is covered in the spots & he says it hurts.

The spots look yellowish & like they are fluid filled - like a tiny blister. Looks like the kind I get ocassionally when run down but I only ever had the odd one or two. His tongue is covered.

Ideas please for cause or cure??

Possibly chickenpox?

DS had chicken pox when he was younger. I did wonder if it could be some virus related to c' pox.
No other symptoms though & dd has never had it so I would have thought she would be breaking out in more spots by now if it was c' pox.

ds1 had it when he was little and got it on his mouth first then hands but not on his feet

Thanks. Some of those pics are gruesome. Poor mites.

Happily I can say ds's tongue doesn't look like any of those (except maybe the one that you can't really see anything on!)

how are they in themselves?.....if they are really miserable,grizzly and sleepingbadly etc (but not necessarily with a temperature)...then they could might maybe etc be cold sores.

sounds like hand foot and mouth dd only got them in her mouth

My dd's got hand,foot and mouth.Cofirmed by doc today.Her tongue is really sore and she's hardly eating.Only a few spots on her hands and feet at the moment.Maybe worth trip to the docs although there is no treatment for it.

Sounds to me like oral thrush which is very common after being run down you need to go and see the gp to get some Nystatin oral suspension for them you cant buy it.
Or it could be vit b deficiency which is very common cause of mouth ulcers in adults,but im sticking with thrush especially as there are lots of them.Seen it all the time in children when worked in pharmacy hope this helps.

DD has been a bit bad tempered but not obviously ill.
DS seemed a bit tired & clingy the past few days but that's not unusual for him - they had a school trip out on Friday so I just thought it was too much running around & having had a cold. Generally a bit run down.

They are both eating fine although ds doesn't eat as much fruit & veg as he should. He has some but not 5 portions - I wondered if it could be a vitamin defficiency but then his sister wouldn't have it. Could be coincidence has she only had 1 or 2 spots & they've gone?

Debbsy - I thought thrush would look like white spots? These def aren't white.
Vit B or B12 could be an issue.

No didnt give any advice except calpol and teething gel for the sore tongue.
poor things really not happy. Now to wait for the other 3 to get it!

i would still say oral thrush if they have had a cold they may have a slight infection hence the yellow,either way think its worth a trip to the dr.

OK, thanks, If it's not dramatically imroved in the morning I'll see if I can get him in. Problem with our doc's is they offer emergency appointments but they tend to be 1st thing so he'd miss some school & I'm supposed to be somewhere tomorrow morning or they'll book him in in a few day's time !

I had this problem with DS about 3 weeks ago, he kept telling me mummy mouth hurts and was very clingy and sore. I took him to GP who said, it will clear on its own. We gave him bonjela and lots of ice pops and IT did clear. It's just crap when they have them. BTW, if it is thrush you will see a lining of white in the roof of their mouths I think.

Looks like im in for a bad night again! DD keeps waking up and crying cos she's gone to suck her thumb which then hurts her tongue.Ive got liquid anbesol.Easier to apply than any gel.
