Chest & back pain from trapped wind

Anyone ever experienced this? I've been getting it off and on for the past month or so, usually in the evening or at night when I'm lying down. I'm sure it's just trapped wind in my chest and not something more serious but it's incredibly painful and can last for a couple of hours. Moving around and stretching seems to help a bit but mostly I just have to wait for it to pass.

I have an appointment with my GP in a couple of weeks but in the mean time just wondering if anyone has had this, has any idea what causes it or how to get rid of it?

Is it under the ribs slightly over to the right? And the back pain in the middle?

Definitely See your GP.
Could it be your gallbladder? Mine plays up mainly in evenings - i get pain underneath my rib cage and in my back.

Hence my questions, mummyplum. I've just had mine out and have never felt better!

I went to my Dr with this yesterday.

I did tell him I thought it was trapped wind but just wanted reassurance that wasn't about to have a heart attack Blush because it was really painful! He gave me a good check over and confirmed that trapped wind or inflamed gullet due to acid. He has told me to take Gaviscon for a couple of weeks.

Thanks Panzee - I do yoga regularly anyway so will definitely give that a try.

Shrinkingnora - no it's not specifically on the right, it moves around and feels like it stretches right across my back.

feedthegoat - I've been trying Rennies which seem to help a little bit but not a lot. But the weird thing is I don't feel like I have heartburn or indigestion.

Shrinkingnora How lucky! Mine is dreadful, waiting to have it out, but its not been seen on the ultrasound as its more sludge than stones.
Sugar This reminds me of how I was at first. Hope it is not anything like that of course.

No I don't either but I suffer from IBS so frequently do get trapped wind and thought it was worth trying Gavison when first had pain. The almighty burping session that followed kind of confirmed my suspicions Blush.

I know everyone responds to different things but I find the liquid Gaviscon a whole lot better than Rennie or Tums. They do much more for me than ordinary mints.

Try nurofen? If it is gallstones that would help but if it is an ulcer it would be a bad thing to take.....

mummyplum - I was extremely lucky in that I had two attacks of biliary colic and then was immediately referred - 10 weeks between first pain and removal. Very clued up GP though. Hope yours is gone soon!

Mine has been since last feb, think it is because they don't immediately suspected it in 'the young' - I got referred in october but nothing since the appointment in december. I chased it up today actually as I have been worried about an infection developing.

(Sorry about the thread hijack!)

dont' think it's an ulcer, the pain isn't anywhere near my stomach, it's across my chest and/or back. hmmm, never thought about gallbladder but i think i'll google it now! can't take gaviscon liquid, just find it revolting.

Sugar the NHS webpage is really good. www.nhs.uk/conditions/gallstones/Pages/Introduction.aspx
I was advised to start a low-fat diet, take buscopan & domperidone which are both available over the counter.

Thanks mummyplum, a bit worried now that maybe it could be a gallbladder problem - will be sure to ask my GP about it when I see her. Appointment is in a week and a half.

Taken Rennies, can't decide if they help a little bit maybe.

It has to be something with simethicone in it, not just ordinary calcium carbonate.

ledkr · 08/05/2011 09:21

Ugh no, can't even bring myself to say the word - I'm one of those people who will do ANYTHING to avoid being sick or seeing/hearing other people be sick, including my own children! Just the thought practically brings on a panic attack. Next suggestion...?

I find that the only thing that really helps mine is a couple of tablespoons of brandy. I don't normally drink brandy so buy the cheapest brand and then I can cook with it as well. I used to be crippled by it, almost literally, couldn't straighten up or move much and it could last for a couple of hours; now "on the brandy" it can be as little as 10 minutes.
