Shoulder of lamb in the slow cooker?

Just been shopping and dashed round with no list and no plan! :o

I've bought a carvery shoulder of lamb dated today at half price, not thinking of course that it'll take about 4 hours to cook. It's too late for cooking/eating today, I'm working for the rest of week so will be in too late to cook it in the evening to have hot that day.

Am I going to have to just cook it and eat it cold or rewarmed, or can I bung it in the slow cooker? If so, anyone have a good recipe? I'd like it quite plain as kids are fussy and it's a big piece of lamb for 2 people!

I'd just stick it in the slow cooker on it's own and cook on low for the day. It'll just fall off the bone and would be delicious served with mash and veggies.

Sounds ideal MrsPnut :) - so, just in dry? do I need to sit it on a chopped up carrot or anything? Will it need crisped in the oven at all at the end?

It won't be crispy but it's so meltingly soft that it's delicious. I usually slosh in about 100ml of red wine but you can add water.

I don't bother with carrots or onions but I'm lazy.

Yes shove of on the slow cooker. Be plenty of juice so won't need anything else. But a little bit if stock or red wine won't hurt if you feel uncomfortable leaving it dry.

Doesn't crisp up and renebver to season. But falls off bone

Freeze it for next weekend?

Cant freeze it as no room :( - I also bought Mince and Ribs that will all need cooked! That's what happens when you go to the shops hungry!

The lamb does sound delicious though - will get up sharp in the morning and bung it in :)

Shoulder of lamb is gorgeous in the slow cooker !
This is my favourite recipe , we have it with mash, peas & green beans .
I sometimes add other bits that are needing to be used up & I skim excess fat off if it needs it before thickening .

I use lamb stock though not beef stock & always add mint ( usually mint sauce Wink) at the end !
Yum !

Nice recipe thanks Tipsy :)

Can I also ask if everyone browns the joint first or just shoves it in as is?

At the risk of again sounding like a cock. Please don't ever use your slow cooker dry.

Stock your meat elevated on onions/veg and cover the bottom of the pot in liquid.. either water or stock.

Lamb does lovely in a crock pot.

I don't bother browning it first.
I've put it in dry without any problems but sometimes put just enough water in to wet the bottom of the pot and sprinkle an Oxo over the joint.
Enjoy Smile

gamer, that was the plan - chopped up carrot and onion on the bottom and and some stock and stick the lamb on top above the stock. That way it wont be "contaminated" by the vegetables! So, do I need to brown it first, I really wont have time for that in the morning so hoping that the answer is no...

We love lamb but usually have steaks or chops. I've never done a joint - and I can't roast beef for some reason so looking for a bit more success with the lamb.

I brown most meat but mine is the sear & stew so no extra dish... not sure if I would otherwise !

The recipe I posted is so versatile , it can be served as it is with the veg that is cooked with the meat or you can take out the meat then push the juice & veggies through a soup strainer or sieve to thicken a gravy for a more Sunday roast style .

I've also done ribs in the sc then finished them off in the oven .. Was a delicate job getting them from sc to oven but they were so tender !!

Yes, it did look nice Tipsy, I have no garlic and no rosemary (I also don't like mint other than toothpaste and polo mints :) )

If this goes well, I'll be a bit more organised next time!

A 2kg shoulder of lamb for £8 was just too hard to resist!

I'll maybe fire the ribs in after - I've also got to get the mince cooked unless i can squeeze something into the freezer.

Lamb was delicious - i left it on all day then popped it in the oven for half an hour and it was tender as anything :)

We had it with mash, broccoli, the carrots from the juices in slow cooker and I made doughboys in the juices while the lamb was in the oven - scumtastic if unusual Tuesday night dinner!

Now I have loads of left over lamb - didn't really slice well, mostly came off in rough chunks - any suggestions as to what to make with it? Stovies maybe?

I've only ever made that with mince but guess that would work :)

If you like spicy food then a variation of homemade mulligatawny soup with the lamb chopped up and crusty bread ?

love spicy food but I don't "do" soup.

A curry would be good rather than the soup maybe :) I'll away and look for a recipe - thank for the inspiration!

Shepherds pie with mince is really cottage pie isn't it? Yummy either way!

I am buying a slow cooker this week - my MIL does the most delicious beer stew - can't wait to try her recipe!
