i take citalopram(ciprimil) at the moment for anxiety but have found it's making me put on weight. my counsellor suggested talking to my doctor about changing to prozac as this generally doesn't cause weight gain. has anyone taken prozac for anxiety and how did it work. thanks in advance! X

Prozac isn`t prescribed much anymore, in the states. My step daughter was taking it, & it made changes in her personality.I take a very old one called triavil.A lot of the anti-depressants can cause sort of a bi-polar reaction.Paxil made my son bi-polar.Freaked me out!!When I am depressed, I put some soothing music on, lay on the couch,& make myself relax, think about the importance of what I am depressed about.Maybe a sort of meditation.

I was prescribed prozac for depression and it did nothing for me... but then I got given effexor (can't think it's generic name!) which is an anti anxiety drug I believe and it worked well for me. I definately think it's worth exploring other drugs if something isn't working for you.

jings, hard to say as I've had a lot of fluctuating weight issues, before and after depression! I believe that I put weight on when I stopped it. I had to get my thyroid etc checked out as the weight gain was fast. Though it was maybe just 'happiness' that did that to me :-S

I guess it also depends on what amount of weight gain/loss would be acceptable to you. I think all in all I've fluctuated between 9.5 andd 11.5 stone though about 10.5 would be my 'normal'.

i am not sure, as have been smaller, and bigger. TBh no, thinking about it, i wouldnt say it did. Thats just me being pg, then not pg, then having a crisis, then scoffing too much.

the answer therefore is no

I have found prozac to be helpful for anxiety but I have put on a stone in weight in the year I have been on it. How can that be due to the tablet, though? Surely it must be me stuffing too much! Perhaps its done something to my metabolism. I read on a site called "Crazy meds" that it is just the luck of the draw which way your weight goes with prozac. Can cause weight gain or weight loss. I don't think I'd want to stop taking it now though. I'm just going to watch my diet and try to exercise.

I'm only on 20mgs which is quite low so perhaps its not fair to blame the tablets!

neednewbag, both prozac and citalopram are in the same family of drugs called SSRIs (selective seratonin re uptake inhibitors) so i would imagine they would have a similar effect as each other. Does anyone else know the difference and the reason these other SSRIs are being prescribed in preference to prozac?

i've been taking 20mg prozac for anxiety for about 2 years now. I have been completely anxiety-free (and consequently blissfully happy) for about 18 months. However... i have also gained 2 stone, and it's still piling on, even though I don't THINK i eat any more than i used to, and i'm exercising as much/little as ever. I reckon about a stone of it can be attributed to not running to the loo all the time due to fear. The other stone i'm not so sure about. possibly the coil also involved.

I had the yawning thing for a few months but then it stopped.

good luck anyway - i hope it works for you as well as it did for me.
