Mental health

Think I need to see gp but what will they do?

I have 2 young children, 3 and 1yo. I've been steadily getting (i think) depressed and anxious since the birth of my second, and also lose my temper with them easily. Particularly when the baby is crying/not sleeping well, which is often.

I haven't had any major meltdowns but am struggling on a daily basis (although not all day long). This morning I woke up and had to force myself out of bed.

I'm going to see my gp as I do t want to get any worse, but i guess I'm just wondering what they will actually do? Is there some sort of questionnaire to determine whether you have depression? Or is it up to me to self diagnose? Haven't experienced this before, I struggled with anxiety in my 20s due to a stressful job but coped without medical help.

Thanks everyone.

My GP had me complete a questionnaire and just asked me a few questions, then gave me some information about treatment options eg talking therapies and anti depressants to take away and read, I then had a follow up appointment to discuss the options and decide what to do.

They seem quite big on asking you what you think would help you but they don't expect you to self-diagnose although you may have a pretty good idea what's going on.

There is a standard questionnaire that your gp should use. Or they should refer you on to whatever mental health services are in your area who should assess you. I'm in Scotland though so it might work differently. They might offer you an antidepressant or other medication too.
You are doing the right thing by seeking help. I had terrible anxiety issues a few years ago and my gp surgery was very helpful. Good luck!

Thanks for this. I managed to get an appointment for next Friday so will see how it goes.
