This will probably on have me post on here, but another kind mn'er advised me to start a thread for people who are worried about the supposed doomsday on the 21/12/12.

I, myself am worried. I suffer from anxiety anyway, and this is just another problem in the long list!

I am worried because i think i won't be able to protect my kids.
I worry because i wonder if the government are covering it up.
I worry incase Nasa are wrong and we are hit by a rouge asteroid no one knows about.

PottedShrimp Tue 18-Dec-12 17:25:51

nothing to worry about. Have you done your christmas shopping? If so, then you know it ain't happening!

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:28:28

Yes i have potted, only because i hadnt heard anything about the doomsday prediction until my dp rented 2012 movie on blinkbox. I them researched it, beliveing it to be true and to be honest the way the world is going at the moment the film wasnt so far off the mark.
I watched the film about 2/3 weeks ago and had finished xmas shopping in Nov.

Hello rocking smile Are you having treatment for anxiety, or if not would you consider seeing the GP? You don't have to feel like this - it must be completely knackering for you.

zlist Tue 18-Dec-12 17:30:47

Were you worried about all the other ones, too?

PottedShrimp Tue 18-Dec-12 17:32:16

good point Zlist. The world has been ending every year for years! This is just another one.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:33:20

Hello MadSleigh
I have been to the gp, she advised me to see how i feel after friday.
I havent slept properly in a week and constantly on edge.
I nearly got run over at school on friday because i was thinking "oh my goodness what if something happens while dd1 is at school i wont be there."
I was even considering keeping dd1 off on friday until my dp told me i wasn't.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:33:58

Zlist and Potted
I didnt know about the other ones.

SaskiaRembrandtVampireHunter Tue 18-Dec-12 17:34:31

"I worry because i wonder if the government are covering it up."

They could try, but there are thousands (probably tens of thousands) of astronomers around the world who world have spotted something too, the government couldn't possibly keep them all quiet.

"I worry incase Nasa are wrong and we are hit by a rouge asteroid no one knows about."

Really, it's the same as above. Even if by some fluke an organisation as well funded, equipped and staffed as NASA did miss it, there are plenty of other organisations (governmental, academic and private) and individual astronomers who would have seen it.

I'm not going to dismiss your fears, I know from the other thread how anxious you are, but I promise you this is not going to happen! On Saturday morning we'll all still be here discussing p&c parking spaces and the merits of naice ham.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:36:25

I want to enjoy christmas.
Honestly i was the biggest christmas fan going until 2 weeks ago.
I was soooo excited to see my kids faces on christmas morning.

D0oinMeCleanin Tue 18-Dec-12 17:36:39

I do think a chat with your GP might help, but to address your points

1) All parents worry about this everyday. A certain amount of worry is good. So much that it effects your day to day life is not normal and you need to seek counseling.

2) The Governement cannot even keep our personal data safe. Do you really think they'd be capable of keeping this under their hat for so long? The internet is full of nonsensical conspiracy theories. This is just another one of those. Plus you'd need all Governments, all around the world, to all agree on keeping it secret. They never agree on anything, ever.

3) I very much doubt that NASA is wrong, plus NASA is only one organisation that monitors Space activity, there are plenty more and they are all in agreement that nothing will happen. They can't all be wrong, can they?

Nostradamus did not believe the world would end in 2012. He predictions carry on well beyond 2012. The Mayans do not believe that the world will end.

So if it is not Nostradamus and not the Mayans, then who, exactly predicted this Armageddon?

Honestly, Rocking, nothing is going to happen on Friday. Reading sites likes those you linked to on the other thread is only going to worry you more. Those sites are made up by attention seeking nutters who have nothing better to do with their time. Don't pay them any attention.

MadSleighLady Tue 18-Dec-12 17:36:59

Hm, that's not very helpful of the GP, given that your anxieties extend to lots of other (perhaps more everyday) stuff as well. I would definitely go and see her again after Xmas if your anxieties haven't diminished (as I suspect they won't).

Somebody on the other thread had this great list of other predicted apocalypses that didn't come off, if that helps at all!

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:40:29

My dp (bless him!) sat up for 3 hours friday night printing off all the theories, and nasa's interview thing etc to try and convince me that i was worring about nothing.
He found this interview with Nasa's top astronomic specialist
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVBLQFW-Q-w
but i know all this and i still worry!
Why?????

That's sad that the GP fobbed you off like that sad How about seeing a different one, is that an option? Some are better with mental health problems than others.

The end of the world has been predicted lots of times by various cultures and religious groups. The JWs predicted it 5 times and finally gave up. Some preacher predicted it last year or the year before.

However, all this is pointless if it's not reassuring you. Anxiety is a funny thing and sometimes being told not to worry can make you worry that you are worrying grin There's lots of support available, don't let one GP put you off getting the support if you need it.

Can you plan yourself something nice on Saturday and try to focus on that when you're feeling worried?

D0oinMeCleanin Tue 18-Dec-12 17:45:24

Why?

I believe it has nothing to do with the apocalypse. I think you are suffering from anxiety and are just projecting onto 21/12/12 to make sense of your general anxiety and after Friday, you will be anxious about something else.

I would make an appointment with another GP.

You sound like an intelligent, sensible woman and have admitted yourself you know nothing is going to happen on Friday, but can't help worrying. This has nothing to do with silly internet conspiracies, it is down to you suffering from a not very nice but very real medical condition that you need support with.

Focusing on Friday is just detracting away from that. Please see another GP.

Here is some info about anxiety, I hope it helps a bit smile

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:47:07

Im meant to be going to my nan and grandads with the dd's on saturday and having my hair and eyebrows done on friday (booked before i knew all this!)
I can go to a different GP, will go after xmas now.

Believe me the UK government is not capable of covering something as large as that up. smile

If you can't stop worrying about it, can you rationalise that if we WERE to be hit by an asteroid/invaded by little green men chances are it would be swift and you'd be dead before you or your children realised what was afoot?

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:51:49

Im also worried for my ex-mil. (dd1 grandma)
She had a heart attack yesterday after hearing her brother, her only living silbling left has bone cancer and is not looking good.

I dont get on with the woman, but when my ex told me, my heart started thumping and i went all hot and shaky.
My dp doesnt understand this, as they are not part of my family anymore and doesnt see why i should care.

Also i am worried about cervival cancer. I had a smear test and it came back clear, but all the time i am thinking and worrying oh god what if ive developed something since april and they wont know until it too late.
My friend had no symptoms of c.c.

My mum has been told she has auto immune hepatitis of the liver. Dont dare google it as it will set me off again.

Tamoo Tue 18-Dec-12 17:54:24

There is no way we could be hit by a rogue asteroid that nobody knows about. Thousands and thousands of people all over the world are watching the far reaches of the universe all the time. We know what will be passing us years in advance. Even if the government wanted to cover something up, they would not be able to, too many people would know.

And why would they cover it up anyway? If somebody spots an asteroid on a direct collision course with Earth, we're not just going to sit back and say, "Oh well, that's it then." Governments around the world will unite to plan a way to neutralise the threat and/or prevent loss of life.

As for other natural disasters, presuming you are in the UK you are safe from super volcanoes and devastating earthquakes.

Politically, there is no current situation anywhere in the world that would lead to nuclear war in the foreseeable future - certainly not within the next week - and even if there was, nuclear war could happen without the world ending.

I'm not belittling your concerns. If we're referencing films I'd say that something like 'Contagion' was a more realistic scenario for a potential threat to humanity. But you have to find a way to manage your anxiety about things over which you have no control, otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy.

my heart started thumping and i went all hot and shaky

Sounds like a panic attack. You poor thing sad I hope you can get to see a more supportive GP soon.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree Tue 18-Dec-12 17:56:28

Why on earth would i have a panic attack over someone who i dont get on with!!
Thats what i dont get!

Tamoo Tue 18-Dec-12 17:58:11

X-posted with your last post. I'm not surprised you're anxious. You have your own health concerns and are also worried about the health of two close family members. I honestly think your anxiety about 21/12 is displaced anxiety about these ongoing health issues.

D0oinMeCleanin Tue 18-Dec-12 17:59:31

Step away from Google.

You really need to tell your GP all of what you have just posted.

DH suffers from medical anxiety, so I know how hard anxiety is to cope with, he refuses to seek help and annoyingly his doctors seem to pander to him rather than focusing on the actual anxiety problem. He is constantly having scans and blood tests and they all come back clear.

He is having yet another test for cancer on Friday, (it's bowel cancer this time - he has already survived lung cancer, stomach cancer, brain cancer, liver cancer, kidney failure and a hernia that only effects women who have had hysterectomies. He had pluracy last week, that cured itself) apparently I will be sorry for not believing that he has a serious, life threatening illness on Friday hmm

Please don't allow yourself to suffer like this any longer. Go and see a different GP this week, not after XMas.

mumwithtwokids Tue 18-Dec-12 18:05:24

Hi Rocking - I really don't mean to sound mean but you really need to get a grip and get help as no matter what reasurance people give you, you don't seem to be listening.

I am also a natural worrier but I had a really serious accident in September and nearly lost my life, I have two young children. This really put things into perspective for me and feel I've been given a second chance. Please just think about the time you are wasting worrying about this, it's time you will never get back. Go and do something fun and spontaneous with your kids, DP and family.
