The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

(waves at bigchoc) Thats better, don't like being here by myself... :)

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2014 08:48

Yes, you were the first, Annie
That's a very sad task re your MIL and it involves a lot of work.
You have done very well to manage any FDs under the circumstances, especially an SV too.

I was caught out at the end of the last thread and then my iPad died instead of hurrying with me.
So, my fault. I expect the others will find us soon.

I had to organise my mum's funeral a few years ago and it is a very miserable time. Post whenever you want hand-holding.
I bought her a memorial bench, on the river path where we used to love walking.

morning!

i ended up doing an unplanned FD yesterday after falling asleep in the afternoon after eating a 99cal pack of quavers with a glass of wine and realising when i woke up that was all other than black coffee and water i'd had all day and i wasn't hungry.

so since weighing myself one week ago and getting shocked into taking action i've had 2 fast days and made an effort to be healthier and not excessive in my eating on the other days and i appear to have lost 6lb.

obviously not a sustainable rate of loss but a happy kickstart for the first week that will encourage me to keep going Smile

good luck to fasters today.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 07/11/2014 09:40

Gosh, Annie that really brings me back to exactly this time last year...we lost MIL to cancer and all she had was DH (and by extension me) to plan everything. I remember all too well the feeling of grief mixed with having to stay focused and organised. Be gentle with yourself. Thanks

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2014 09:46

Welcome, Honey, Lost to the main thread
Smile
Well done, both of you, for climbing back on the wagon. I'm sure you have lots of useful tips from your 1st time round.
Are you frequent or monthly weighers, out of interest ?

That's a great return Honey It is motivating to drop a lot the first week or 2, even when you know it will slow down a lot.

Lost Sounds like you are back into the IF / 5:2 swing very well and I'm sure you'll be reporting progress soon.
You're in Malaysia ? There are quite a few posting in the UK night time:
I believe Boleh is in Indonesia, so should be around the same time. Also a few in NZ, including vvv I think

Breadandwine · 07/11/2014 11:47

Well done, BC! That's a lot of work you set yourself. Thanks

I've never seen a post over 1000 - perhaps a note to MNHQ?

You're right to go easy on yourself, Annie. Time enough afterwards when everything settles down.

I recently came across a children's rhyme our kids used to love - and now I'm reading it every night over Skype to my 14 month old grandson, Oscar. He listens with rapt attention!

Just I thought I'd share.

Scouring out the porridge pot
Round and round and round.

Out with all the scraith and scoopery
Lift the eely ooly droopery
Chase the glubbery slubbery gloopery
Round and round and round.

Out with all the doleful dithery
Ladle out the slimey slithery
Hunt and catch the hithery thithery
Round and round and round.

Out with all the ubbly gubbly
On the stove it burns so bubbly
Use a spoon and use it doubly
Round and round and round.

Marking place...I posted on the last thread a few weeks ago and have been lurking since.

Today's NSV: have lost another belt hole! Bought the belt a month ago, it used to fasten on the 2nd hole. Now it fastens on the 4th (same pair of jeans). Woo hoo!

Today is FD no 2 for this week. Yesterday I weighed 10 stone 9.75; today it was 10 stone 11.25 (grr!) but I suppose that's FD/NFD fluctuation. I'm a frequent weigher, as you can see. My goal is 9 stone.

I am breastfeeding 4 month old DS, so have been aiming at fasts of 800-1000 cals. On Tuesday I did 750 cals, but I was starving all that day, and then on Wednesday, a NFD, I couldn't stop eating. Is this normal? Today I am aiming at 1000 calories again because I must have gone well over my TDEE on Wed. I suppose I should do 1000 cal fasts for the next couple of weeks and focus on making sure I don't go over TDEE (somewhere between 1700 and 1900 cals depending on exercise) on the NFD. Then if I stop losing I can try dropping it.

Did anyone else read the thread in Chat about how much thin people eat? I found it v useful - so many people saying they don't snack at all, or they don't eat breakfast, or they skip lunch regularly. I find on NFD I manage much better if I skip breakfast and only start eating at lunchtime. Cutting out snacks is next on my agenda!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2014 16:02

Oh, excellent. Looks like everyone found us here after thread 47
< strong advice to any iPad / iPhone owner: don't upgrade to new IOS levels. They are Apple's evil plot to make us buy their crap gadgets annually >

Great NSV, cheddar Losing 2 holes is a lot of belly fat.
Everyone fluctuates FD / NFD so we advise NOT to monitor weight daily. It can worry some folk.
Weigh in at most every week, preferably fortnightly, so you see the overall trend. Keep monitoring your belt.

BadPenny · 07/11/2014 17:14

Hello all! New thread yay!

I'm on my third NFD since starting 5:2. Appetite still weirdly absent.

Cheddar - could be the bf hormones that are making you hungry. Definitely my experience that it made me hungrier than usual (which was already pretty hungry).

Weighed myself today and I was just over 10 and a half stone. Aiming to get back to 9. Planning to take measurements too (if I can find the tape measure)!

mumster79 · 07/11/2014 17:37

Hi,
I'm a recent devotee to 5:2 so please may I join?
Lost three pounds last week - definite WOL once I've lost two stone!

TalkinPeace · 07/11/2014 18:45

Hi all - just for silliness sake I've put a new picture on my profile
holding steady a pound or two heavier than my ideal, but tonight is Wine and pizza so that's that

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2014 19:31

Cheddar and any other BFers:
You can do 1000-cal FDs and then, only when you feel ready, reduce that gradually to say 700.
You can also return to 1000 cals whenever you need more fuel, e.g. for growth spurts

Great picture, TIP, svelte and agile!

I have totally failed this week, no fasting, except for a couple of 18:6 days. Mostly 1,200 cal days, but that's not the same as 2x500 cal days. Ill kids, broken car and general 'cabinfeverness' has contributed to a stubborn, sulky, non-fasting Bimble!

Well done everyone else, very inspiring and a kick up the ass to read all your successful stories from this week (and good to see you back, Mazzle!).

Next week it will be different!

Bimblepops · 07/11/2014 23:56

And thank you, BigChoc, for another top thread!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/11/2014 00:22

Bimble A week of basically daily CR should still lose some fat and might even be a useful variation, to keep your body guessing.
Start 5:2 again properly on Monday - you know you'll feel better for it

Anyone heard from four? Is she ok?

Chocupid · 08/11/2014 09:29

Ah hello all, found you. Thanks for the new thread bigchoc
Hope everyone is ok. Well done Honey that should keep you going!
Good luck with the funeral Annie my SIL is going through the same at the mo it's so sad!

I weigh the same again this week but Not surprised as I can't seem to get back into 2 successful FDs yet! Keep letting myself down. Blush
I will try for 2 again next week.
Today is the charity fitness day, 7classes from 9.30 till 5pm, so I may get one in today as not much time to eat, unless when home I stuff my face!

jellypi3 · 08/11/2014 09:31

Ahh found you :D Marking my place, did another FS yesterday, ended on 400 cals. Seems to be getting easier and easier to not eat until dinner time!
