How depressing...busted a gut for an hour in the gym (sprints on the running machine, cross trainer, burpees, lunges etc)

Only burnt 350 calories.

Sob

Hardly seems worth it!

How much were you expecting to burn? An hour of an advanced level cardio class burns up to 650 calories and I bet you weren't doing cardio at that level, so 350 doesn't sound too bad for gym based cardio. How long were your breaks? Are you beginner or quite fit already and a regular at this?

Depressing isn't it. Grin That's why 90% of weigh loss is diet. It requires seriously hard core exercise to burnt off a Mars bar...

Sorry, when I said I bet you weren't working at the level of an advanced cardio class, it's just that I never get to that level working on my own in the gym, my rest periods are longer, the heat and intensity in the room aren't the same and I know I don't push myself for as long as I would be pushed in a class to keep going at the high intensity sections. Doesn't mean the gym sessions aren't good and like I say 350 calories isn't bad.

what program device are you using to work out calorie burn Jj?
They are often out by a good percentage.
I find it best to look at my average heart rate when running given distance and then extrapolate from that

Suzanne; My heart rate monitor was working out the calories burned. Is that they same?

Makes sabres:I think you might be right in that my rest periods were prob longer than a class. That said I did push it more than I usually do

My DH says it is weight related too - ie the heavier you are the more you burn? That kind of makes it worse tho as I will still eat the same slice of cake as him but it will take twice the effort of my part to burn it off. (I would insert a sad face emoticon if I could find one)

my garmin underestimates, and it is a guess....you cant determine exact calorie burn from heart rate alone.
It is more accurate in steady state aerobic exercise, less so with HIIT or strength training.

yes it is weight related for most activities.

I ignore what my garmin says and use this www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx
