Runners knee?

I did my first half marathon two weeks ago. I had done a few long runs and had properly trained over quite a while.....anyway the run was slightly more 'off road' than we thought and my knees took a real battering. I have never had bad knees beforeHmm. So two weeks on and I still have a Achey pain (more annoying discomfort). I tried a 4 mile slow run and was ok whilst running but now it's sore again! Feels like I have bashed my knee really hard on something. So my question is should I completely rest it? I am keen to keep my fitness up, maybe kettlebells? Confused

I reckon something lower impact than kettlebells -there's quite a focus on the lower body.

Cycling is supposedly gentler on the joints. Pilates for sure.

Fitness blender do low imoact cardio workouts.

Rest is best, though I'm well aware how crap it feels.

Is it swollen? Even a tiny bit compared to the other knee?

No swelling. Worse when going down stairs etc .

I used to get that same issue a lot. I thought the same as you, slow down the workout and it would heal itself. About a month down the line and it was still acting up. My friend suggested that I stopped exercising for 2 weeks and see how it went. If you knew me, you'll understand that that was not an option Hmm. So I decided to slow it down, and I began gave up the running for a few week. Instead, I jumped on the bike and started swimming. It was really good for my knee and my fitness level didn't suffer at al :).

Where is the pain? Under the kneecap or on the side of the knee?

I think it's under the knee cap as it hurts on top but under iyswim! I haven't ran in it for about a week and beginning slowly to feel less pAin. Walking down stAirs or down hill I can feel it niggling. Just hep it's not the end Hmm

hi there

i'm marathon training (eek!) and did my first h/m a few weeks ago, had very similar symptoms to what you're describing and it turns out to be weak glutes and overstretched hamstrings!

the lack of swelling is tell-tale apparently.

best thing to do is RICE and see a physiotherapist. if it's 'just' your hammies, you'll be given exercises to strengthen weaker parts and iron out the painful bits

Definitely see a Physio, do Pilates and quad, flute and hamstring stretching. Do low impact stuff eg bike and cross trainer, swimming ideal, if you stop all exercise you can get more problems when you start so try to keep up exercise keeping pain at a minimum but joints and muscles moving

It sounds like my bursitis but I was a bit swollen. Had steroid injection to aid healing

I'm in exactly the same situation. Did my first Half at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago. Destroyed my knees and could hardly walk for a few days. First time I've ever had knee trouble. Two weeks later (last Saturday) I tried to run again and the pain came back immediately. I'm off to the Physio on Thurs so hopefully I'll have a proper diagnosis, but fairly certain it's runner's knee.
