Advice on my running injury (is it an injury?) or pain perhaps please.

Hello
I have been running regularly for years and have recently signed up to run the edinburgh marathon for charity so I am running more frequently and longer distances.

I have a recurring pain in my right foot. The foot feels slightly numb then I get a pain that feels like I have a stone in my shoe.

The running shop say it is metatarsalgia and nhs website and runners world info seems to support that.

I was fitted for inserts but they still hurt and give me blisters in other places :(

I do not want to make it worse so i stopped running today when it hurt on what was meant to be a long run.

Any advise? Would a podiatrist be the best bet?

Do you just get it when running? I had the same sort of thing, and realised it was the way my laces pressed on the top of my foot compressed a nerve. Just changing my lacing sorted it out!

I would suggest googling plantar fasciitis to see if that fits.

I had it about 3 years ago. I tried everything and ended up with a steroid injection from the GP. It was a miracle cure for me.

Hi yes only when I am running and only after 8-12 k of so, never on wee runs. I did wonder if laces were too tight/loose and tried adjusting but that did not seem to work.

Will google that pippa thank you.

Is so frustrating as I feel fine and am full of energy but cannot keep running due to pain but need to get miles up. Was planning to do a 20k route this morning but had to stop and walk after c8k so v disappointed in myself. Had my running tunes on and was had to just walk home as wanted to run!

Sory to hijack but I think I have planter thingemy, I have had pain in my right heal for over a year now and when I get up in the m orning or get of the sofa I can barely walk then it goes off. Do I need to see a GP or will it go away on its own? Definatly not from running but I worked on a ward and was walking around 12.5 hours a day.

Hopoe someone can help with your injury

It's worth seeing the GP about this type of pain.

I had it and an xray showed a stress fracture. They said it's very common if you've significantly increased your exercise routine.

Mine was due to a training plan for a marathon and a new high impact aerobics class.

It took a while to stop hurting and I built exercise back in slowly. I was lucky enough not to need a cast thankfully. But had I ignored it for longer I may have needed one.

It sounds like Mortons Neuroma to me. Feeling like you have a stone in your shoe is a classic sign. I know because I had one and had it removed three years ago. You need a referral to a podiatrist ASAP for diagnosis.

Another test is your foot should hurt when you squeeze your toes together. Surgery isn't the only option if it's a neuroma (growth on nerve between metatarsals), you can also try different shoes and orthotics.

Hope you can get it looked at soon.

Meant to say try and get it looked at as quickly as poss. I left it for ages and it didn't improve. It then took much longer to get back into running and if you love running as much as me you don't want too much time off.

thanks a lot orange that is really interesting.

My foot does not hurt when I squeeze my toes or do anything else. The only time it hurts is on a longer run. Before I set my sights on the marathon I used to run c 30-40k in total per week (3 x 7k and 1 x 10k) and did not suffer.

Only when I start to run for over an hour does the pain start.

I have the podiatrist today so hopefully he will help me. Thank you very much for your advice. I hope your foot is better now?

Hi yes my foot is much better now thanks. I had a successful operation and last year ran my first half and then my first marathon, the VLM.

Good luck with the podiatrist appointment.
