Sit ups ... lose fat or just tone?

I'm loosing weight at the moment, I have a big flabby mummy tummy, If I started doing sit ups would it just tone the muscles lost below the mountain of flab of would it help to shift it? My priority is loosing the tum at the moment.

Core muscle exercises will definitely help.

However, diet plays a far larger part in weight loss.

Is it 80% diet, 20% exercise? Something like that.

Sit ups won't do anything for belly fat, indeed it will just tone the muscle underneath. Unfortunately you can't you cant spot pick losing fat. Only way is either through diet or some form of cardio exercise.

From what I understand sit ups exercise the outer abdominals so indeed they they won't burn fat in a localised area. What might help a bit though is doing exercises that tone the transverse muscle (deep abdominals) like planks etc. If that muscle has been stretched with pregnancy toning it might "pull it in" so to speak which would pull everything else in with it. It still wouldn't burn the fat and might take a while to see a difference (compared to a diet) but strengthening the core muscles has other benefits as well so might be worth doing along with a diet.

From what I gather, Jillian Michaels 6 Week 6 pack is a good tummy workout. Takes 35 minutes, gets the heart rate going and focuses on the tum. I did it for the first time last night.
