Cycling clothes query, trousers recommendations?

I've been out on my bike recently (post Olympic enthusiasm high & wanted a change to running), & am curious as to what seasoned cyclists wear on their bottom half. I've been using my running cropped leggings which is ok but will get chilly in the winter.

Any suggestions gratefully received please! (ps I cycle for pleasure, couple of hours a few times a week, tow paths, local parks, the quieter roads the better).

You can buy long winter cycling leggings (complete with padded bottom!).

For really wintery weather I've got a pair of thermal New Balance leggings with a wind proof layer on the front of the thighs. They're good for rainy days to keep the wind chill off. Makes a big difference, but unless it's quite cold they can get a bit sweaty as the windproof layer isn't very breathable.

Look out for Polartec Power Stretch fabric - it's a thin stretchy fleece with a smooth outer face. Very warm. Several brands use it for leggings.

You can get very lightweight padded liner shorts to go under an ordinary pair of leggings.
