Questions about Arnica 200

With my first baby I had a lot of bruising and discomfort after the birth. Not having known about Arnica last time but having seen people on mumsnet talking about it I've decided that I have nothing to lose if I take it this time, might work, might not but hey I'll try it. Oh and it is ok to take it while breasfeeding isn't it?

I have been to the health food shop in town and asked them about Arnica and the only ones they stock are 30c and 60c. I asked if they had Arnica 200 as that had been recommended and the lady gave me a scornful look and said that it only comes in a potency of 30c or 60c. I said that I knew of people (fellow mumsnetters) who had taken Arnica 200 and she said that the person must have been mistaken as it they don't make a dosage as high as that.

So have I got it wrong? Am I looking for a bottle of Arnica tablets with 200 tablets in it or am I looking for Arnica tablets that are 200c? What does the c stand for by the way just out of interest?
I've checked out Boots and our health food shop is Holland and Barrett neither of which can help me.

Please could someone enlighten me as to which Arnica tablets I'm supposed to be buying?

Linnet, I got the Arnica tablets from my homeopath who specialises in packs for child birth. I'm sure I can find the details about her if you want. I'm in the Watford area, she;'s in Harrow, but I think she would post.

I took arnica 200c after both my births and healed very quickly. you can buy this potency but a health food shop may not stock it. Have you got a homeopathic dispensary nearby? Glovers and Napiers are the names of some near me but I don't know where you are! If you still can't get it post a message and I will send you some

If you don't have any luck finding someone nearby, Linnet, you can buy homeopathic remedies online via Ainsworths - I've used them recently and was very impressed with how fast & efficient their service was.

Most remedies are only available in 30 and 60 but some shops can order it for you from a homeopath. It definitely is available

Is is just Arnica that you want? When I had my second I bought a pregnancy and childbirth kit which has lots of remedies in it-you need to read through it beforehand but it is useful for many side effects of pregnancy, birth and beyond (god, I sound like an advert-sorry) but i found it really useful. It was about £30-you may be able to do a search and get it cheaper but I got mine from www.activebirth centre.com (sorry new to this and not sure how to do a link)

I got mine from Helios on the net. Don't know if it helped but I didn't even use up one packet of pads after my section so it may have.

Ok Folks, quick update here. Went to another Health food shop that we have in town and they had Arnica 200, Yipee!!! Don't know why I didn't go to them in the first place they are independant not a chain. So I now have my Arnica 200, the guy in the shop said that they get it in from a homeopathic dispensary in Glasgow and told me that I've not to touch the pills before putting them in my mouth. Anyone know why this is just out of interest?

Ex to be DH told me it is because you can absorb them more effectively on your tongue - rather than through the pores of your finger tips. Something to do with moisture . . .

I've also got me arnica ready but not at that strength.

Linnet - it's because unlike conventional pills, the dose is actually on the surface coating not the inside, so if you were to touch them you could remove some or all of the dose onto your fingertips.

I'm trying to get hold of some Arnica 200 for my other half who is due to give birth in 9 days time. However, I've also just been made redundant so money is tighter than ever - Does anyone know where I can buy these really cheaply online? Everywhere I go seems to have a minimum order charge (like Helios) or want something like £6 for the tablets - Arghhhh!!

seasonticketless, email me through contact a talker with your address and ill send you some although i would say that they dont go off and they are really good for any knocks bumps bruises operations and anything that needs to heal quickly.

also, from what i remember, apart from not touching the tablets before putting them on your tongue, avoid consuming strong drinks or foods (coffee, tea, garlicky stuff etc). i hope that's what i was told and am not confusing it, but better be safe than sorry. i didn't use the 200c but they were magical these arnica tablets. honestly.

sleeplessmum2be - You should have an email (hopefully!) Thanks for that

Great (and apt) username btw!

Branster, you wouldn't take with food of any kind, leave half an hour between and also avoid peppermint and spearmint in essential oils and toothpaste

Hi, the 'c' stands for the centesimal scale, and indicates the potency of homeopathic treatments. 6c, 12c and 30c are the most commonly available to the public, though homeopaths tend to use higher potencies more regularly, with higher potencies it's more important to match remedies accurately as they can produce more dramatic reactions. For birth, arnica 200c can be taken by mum starting straight after the birth, one dose every three hours for three doses only. 'Bellis Perennis' (one dose each day for three days from the day after the birth) can help mum's organs regain their natural position. HTH
(BTW, in case you mistake me for someone who knows what they're talking about, the above info is all gleaned from a brill book my brill h/v lent me after we spoke about my interest in homeopathy! )

Oh yeah, also, only the person taking the remedy should touch it, and shouldn't have food or drink for 15 mins before or after - though I think that was already mentioned? Oh, and let it dissolve under the tongue rather than chomping it!

It's good to take Arnica 200 when labour starts too.
It's also helpful if you have an anterior lip (where cervix is not yet fully dialted but near...) - that with going on all fours with bum higher than head to remove pressure on cervix.

Hi there

Could anyone tell me how soon after a c-section you can take Arnica 200 and also how frequently can I take them?
A friend of mine has just had a section and said they were fantastic, so we have now got some (My sections in 5 days) but my friends hasn't told me how often I need to take them or anything (With her now having a newborn she isn't easy to get hold of - and we all know how hectic it can be when you have just given birth ). So any advice would be grately appreciated
TIA,
Mel

melstone, i dont know about arnica200, sorry. But i took arnica30 from 2 weeks before section with ds and second time around I took them immediatly after section.

melstone01 · 21/05/2004 11:15

gloworm, I took them aswell but was told that Arnica 200 were alot more effective. I am presuming as they are stronger that you would take them less etc but just not sure. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of information about about 200c but can find loads on 30c etc. Thanks for coming back to me though,
Mel

Take it before the section and every four hours after for a day or so than go down to twice a day for a week.

Sooooooo confused! Was told in Boots today that 6c is higher dosage than 30c. Is that wrong? Didn't buy it as I knew I'd get more sense from Netmums. Which of the two should I buy - 6c or 30c? (Don't have time to look for Arnica 200 as dd coming any day!)

Report
gloworm · 05/06/2004 10:09

jaffa, 30c is the stronger one.
your health shop will be better trained to give advice on remedies than boots IMO.

So reassuring to know they're giving out the wrong advice!!!! Thanks so much for some sensible information.
