How long is your tent?

And do you ever have problems pitching it.

I'm hoping concerned we may have to buy a new one and the ones I like are sometimes 7 metres or more. Our current one is 6 and it often takes up the whole pitch.

Can a tent be too long?

Problems pitching as in: finding a pitch is big enough, not actually getting the thing up.

We have a massive tent but only go to the sorts of sites where they dont limit pitch size ie big field type places. We camp with our smaller tent otherwise.

Well yesterday we put up our old frame tent which was a £8 bargain...Ok a few bits are missing
It's a litchfield challenger 5 and it's huge.
It only fits in one place in our garden, which is up a slope, and I think it's only about 3 or 4m long.
It's about 2m wide probably.

The height is a problem, I couldn't reach to get the flysheet over the top, meanwhile the poles were rocking about madly and the baby was getting lost somwehere under the groundsheet.

So much for doing a 'fun thing for the children'. I am lucky still to have possession of them both after that.

I think ours is about 7.45m x 5.5m - but it is T shaped, so we can park the car on the pitch next to the porch area and still fit on all picthes here but it was last years model and cheaper than this

If we have space we also have an additional canopy for the front which adds another copule of meters, but when we go we do ask for big piches

I think the issue is circumference rather than length...our tent is about as long as the QE2 but as she isn't too wide we tend to be ok and have room to put the car too.

Mind you our pitch in France this summer is 120m2 so we may get lost on it.

What tent are you considering?

Not quite sure what which tent yet as I keep ruling things out through ignorance - eg an extra metre isn't really going to be a problem, from what I read here.

maybe something like this though but those windows are a bit weird...

we've just got an 8 man Khyam Kansas 8 which is a similar footprint to the Quebec but a bit bigger. In the garden it looks absolutely huge, but when you put it up on the site it hasn't got a bigger footprint than an average caravan (7.5m 3.8m) We figured to go for a tunnel type as you have the option of putting it on the pitch sideways to fit (like a caravan) rather than across and encroaching into the next pitch. I did look at one 7.5m 6.5m triangular shaped but thought this would be best. Before buying I checked with a couple of sites and it seems to be as long as you can fit within the boundaries (irrespective of angle) they are OK, that's where the huge triangle tents could struggle.
Also think about drying the tent, ours is currently up in the garden drying (more like the garden is in the tent) as it was wet this morning when we packed up, you need to be able to put it up somewhere to dry.

Oh, and the Kansas 8 has the same windows on the side and they work fine, although when it is raining (like this morning) you have to roll them up the right way otherwise the rain gathers in the folds.

Gobbledigook · 27/04/2008 21:27

Ours is 7.7 X 4.8 tunnel tent - mind you, we've nto been anywhere in it yet so don't know if we'll have pitch problems.

I have an outwell colorado that sleeps 8. the exact design of mine is no longer made, I think that there is a colorado 7, which is very similar.

Great tent, and dead easy to put up as there are 5 idential 'supports, each made of two idential side pieces and 1 ridge pole....Utterly idiot proof, and ir goes up 'as one' so there is no flysheet to pull over the top (vital if you area short arse like me.

Dh can stad up in the tent and he is 6 foot tall.

We have a vermont l and have had no problems so far but the sites we tend to stay on don't have restrictions anyway.
