How do you manage? How old are your kids?

What do you mean when you say how do you manage? What sort of things are concerning you?

My kids are 6, 3 and 1.

I camped when my children were 3.5 and 6. they are now 6.5 and 9. It gets easier and harder IYKWIM - when they are older they want more freedom to go to the shop and the playarea and want go in other people's tents with the friends they make so bit more stressful than when they potter outside your tent with their toys when they are 3.

Anyone for snowy camping?

How you manage in the cold? What sort of bedding do you use etc?

We camp from Whitsun onwards and dd is now 4 (started when she was 1). I'd love to be able to go camping earlier as cant afford other holidays.

Just the cold really. How do you manage when the temps are around 1 -2 at nighttime to keep warm enough?

Layers UNDER the beds are important. I put picnic blankets down first (rubber backed) then two thick throws under the airbed then a blanket on top of the airbed then our sleeping bags then more blankets on top. That was after a night in August by the way - dear god it was a clear night and we froze. Next day went to ASDA and bought two £7 13 tog quilts to put under and over us!

NEVER SCRIMP ON BEDDING!

I manage fine from whitsun onwards with stuff under and over but not sure how I would at this time of year but would love to.

you are quite mad

have you seen the weather?

The Kbears don't camp until the summer, we are wimps!

oh right. well tbh we only went so early this year cos we got a campervan recently. i'm not sure if i would go camping in a tent before it warms up a bit.

what we did in january was go to a youth hostel in the scottish highlands. It was £35 a night for the family room which had its own bathroom. I genuinely prefer it to a B&B as there is usually a nice big warm kitchen and some sort of games / living area. It's a good option for when camping is not possible.

We are trying tomorrow!
Got warm sleeping bags with fleece liners and me and dd have a hot waterbottle. longsleeved top followed by pjs and bed socks. Might wear a hat as well. Blanket over the top and underneath.
I hope that will do us as we won't be able to fit more into the car.
dd is 8 and quite hardy. I have decided that I am not!

We're going tomorrow!

Lots of insulation under the beds, lots of covers over, hot water bottles and a big thermos flask filled last thing at night so everyone can have tea/hot chocolate first thing in the morning. Love winter camping!

Hopefully the weather will improve for you - we've already had our Easter holidays and not even I am mad enough to camp in the snow in March.

Why would your dh be worried about taking your dd?

dylsmum1998 · 06/04/2008 16:53

seeker - have you camped early in the year as this with your children younger, or did you just do summer camping while they were small?

dylsmum - We come back next saturday! I keep stuffing more and more blankets into the car lol!!

Been wondering how we will manage with it going dark so early and it being cold. We are going to the cinema one night. Bowling another maybe. Then 3 nights in the pub nursing a pint of beer very slowly!! We are going to teach dd some card games so she doesnt get bored at the pub!

However the metoffice has another snow watch going for tomorrow!!

Seeker, what a fab idea about the thermos for the morning.

He'd think she were going to get hypothermia - he's a worrier. How old were your kids when you'd have gone in this weather?

Too cold for me now but might I recommend hot water bottles?
Even in Summer an essential on my camping list.
