Which formula?

DD is BF but I'm thinking about giving her the odd bottle of formula if I fancy a red wine or two. I express for her childminding days but it's just if I end up without the breastmilk to give her etc.....does it matter which formlua one and for occasional use does it make any difference if it's ready made in a carton rather than powdered?

I would say APtamil - apparently it's the most like breast milk

Good luck x

Don't think it makes any difference whether ready made or powder. I use cartons because I am hopeless and lose count of the scoops when mixing from powder.
No idea which brands are best. My DD has SMA, which some mothers I know disapprove of mightily (not sure why, just get the "looks"), but it's been fine for us.

ooh whats wrong with SMA?

ScaryHairy · 11/05/2007 22:48

MaPickle - don't ask me. I get the looks, I don't give 'em!

yes indeed - why is it the evil one??

Thats what i use since giving up BF ... I thought the looks were just "get her buying formula what a shit mum" looks not specific to SMA!

Report
ScaryHairy · 11/05/2007 22:50

I promise to ask the look givers when I see them next. I'm sure it has no basis in fact and is just more "mummy-science" (i.e. crap).

Am no authority, but I would have thought one kind of formula is much the same as another. Am happy to be enlightened as to whether one variety is vastly superior.

Sorry PTIYPASI this evil SMA debate is not very helpful for you is it ... I've found SMA fine and the mini cartons (250ml) are partic handy for out and about or if you only want to do one formula feed a day ...

the only thing about using powdered is that it has to be used within 4 weeks once opened so if you are looking at occasional use then individual cartons would probably be your best option. I used sma with dd and am using aptamil for ds.

ScaryHairy · 11/05/2007 22:53

I've found it fine too.
Aren't they all pretty much the same (other than the non-milk based ones, of course)?

Report
shonaspurtle · 11/05/2007 22:54

I was planning on using the SMA ready-made cartons when ds is weaned and I need to leave a bottle if I ever go out.

I reckon that if it's only occasional, the convenience of the ready-made stuff is worth the extra cost. Don't think the brand makes any difference.

Will need to hope that ds cooperates though...

all formulas are pretty much the same. i used SMA with ds coz i panicked in the hospital and sil used it. the only prob most mums have with sma is the marketing (will not get into that again) but ds liked it. it may affect your milk production but im not sure. how old is she?

Report
cylonbabe · 11/05/2007 22:56

i think most people use whatever the hospital was using, unless they have a problem withit, iyswim

They're all pretty similar - go for the cheapest - think it's farleys.

Surely breastmilk after you've had one glass of wine is better than formula?

Once you start mixing be aware that though some people manage it effectively some of us couldn't and milk supply can drop off rapidly.

Also used Sma when i stopped bfing at 9 mths. Tried others which I liked ie Hipp Organic, but they were not always readily available in local shops (Sma was).

Sorry but I'm pretty new to mumsnet ... I have never ever noticed an advert etc for SMA ... Is there someway to sum up this marketing debate on SMA without launching a whole new debate? (Probably not actually, you're probably right not to mention it)

Report
Rantum · 11/05/2007 23:02

I mixed from 7 mths no probs and only stopped bfing at 9 mths because we were moving, renovating and travelling alot and it enabled other people to feed him at a time when I was very busy - so mixed feeding had no repercussions for my own well-established milk supply.

Marketing debate - SMA have launched a new logo where the "M" of SMA is curvy and is shaped to look (in the opinions of different people) like a mother cuddling her child, a mother breastfeeding her child, "a funny "M"", a heart or a bum (this latter my DH's opinion).
There was a discussion around whether the logo was supposed to look like a mother feeding her child and if so, was it a way to get around the prohibition on formula being marketed as "closest to breastmilk" (what with them all being so different to breastmilk that it is like comparing an apple to a seagull).
Didn't follow the whole thing and have no opinion myself, but it may have turned into a row.

Ah thanks all - DD is 5 months old. 1-2 glasses of wine is fine I'm sure but if I have more than that......

I'm sure my supply would be fine as all has been well after giving her the odd bottle of expressed without expressing. I'm a tad full for the next feed but that's fine.

I shall grab a couple of cartons of whatever looks most pretty!

We used Cow and Gate, started using SMA but found that DD found it quite hard to digest and when I spoke about it to another friend she said that for some babies they had problems, noting against it personaly just didn't work for us
