Infant feeding

eating grapes while breastfeeding

A DF has a 5 day old baby, born 4 weeks prem, and she's got a grape craving at the moment.
Midwife advised her today not to eat any as it would unsettle the baby.
Is this right?

TIA

lol. I thought this was going to be a thread about a woman breastfeeding in the supermarket while eating unpaid-for grapes. But if they've already been through the checkout then fine. Her body is telling her what she needs surely?

Never heard of that one before. How bizarre!

What next? Why shouldn't the poor girl eat grapes if she wants to?! A little of what you fancy & all that.

My HV told me that eating grapes can sometimes upset the baby's tummy - a bit like some people find that they can't eat spicy food or dairy when they breastfeed because it passes to the baby and they don't tolerate it very well. Most people wouldn't have a problem with it.

Me too SP.Grin
That's bollocks mckenzie.

Am firm believer in going with what your body craves when b/feeding which in my case was rivers of expensive french wine and lots of cheese.

I saw the title and thought "yes please" :)

I drank a lot of orange juice when ds was first born and it totally upset his stomach. He did 24 poos in one day before we tracked down the orange juice as the culprit Shock

I have heard people say grapes are acidic, too, so there could be something in it.

I was so hoping that this was going to be a thread about the policeman wondering whether to arrest for exposure or shoplifting...

If I were her I'd eat the grapes and if it does upset the baby, not eat them again. I wouldn't just assume it would upset him / her though

New one on me. [puzzled emoticon]

I always thought that if you ate stuff you liked when pregnant then the amniotic fluid tasted different so the baby got used to it?

I have heard of someone whose baby got bad wind everytime after she ate grapes.

And they're poisonous to dogs.

bizarre - i'm sure that orange juice and garlic affected my DS when he was wee though.

I'd say to try it and see what happens. I drank a lot of wine while bf and ds was fine, and it's made from grapes Grin

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs too. Can't judge whether something is good for us by looking at doggy diet!

I was told this by a MW just after i had DS.

Have no idea whether there is any truth in it, i didnt pay much importance to it.

I thought the same as SP - and was wondering if it would be possible to go round the supermarket, breastfeeding DD, while eating unpaid for grapes Grin.

She should eat them if she wants them, if she then thinks baby is unsettled - well at least she'll know.

I bfed for 2.5 years - no way was I giving up everything on the list of "things midwives think might cause stuff".

Sometimes it may affect a baby. Sometimes almost any food will affect some baby. The only way to be sure is to try it. DS never had any problem with grapes (and I ate enough of them) but was troubleds by fenugreek, go figure...

PMSL at 24 poos! I thought our 5 was a record!
Everyone has a favourite- oooh you can't have that if you're pregnant! Ooooh you can't have that if you're breastfeeding! Ooooh you can't have that if you're...breathing! FGS it's a tad extreme. If I get an unsettled stomache from prawns...does that mean that you do too? Grapes maybe disliked one baby but doesn't mean it will bother them all!

This to be filed under 'things that people say to make breastfeeding sound awkward and difficult.'

What rubbish.

She can eat them if she wants to!

thanks very much everyone for all the replies. I shall pass them on. DF will be happy to go with the 'suck it and see' answer I'm sure.

Can you eat whatever you want when you are breast feeding or do you still have to stay away from the foods you aviod during pregnancy eg. peanuts, pate, wine, blue cheese etc?

Report
edam · 20/05/2006 14:36

You can eat pretty much what you like when you are breastfeeding, although if there is a family history of allergies, I think the advice is to avoid peanuts (although that is not based on evidence, just assumption, IIRC).

do you have to wait a few hours if you drink a glass of wine or is that okay?

No, you don't need to wait. I think the point is that the concentration of alcohol is so small that it won't do any harm. Might be a different matter if you have 10 glasses though, I don't know!

The grapes thing made me LOL - it reminds me of all those bizarre things girls used to be told about not washing their hair during a period.

Report
LucyJones · 20/05/2006 14:43

thanks - that will certainly influenece my decision whether or not to b/feed Grin
