What do you think of Mei?

Seen a few May's and a lot of Mae's but I realy like Mei. Just Mei.

It is Chinese or Japanese and means pretty. I think it is rather lovely.

If, say, I was an employer and was told I was meeting someone called Mei I would expect a Chinese lady to turn up. Nothing wrong with that, obviously, but if you are not of Chinese heritage your daughter will have to constantly correct everyone who will assume it is really "May". And I would imagine she might get bored of that.

I think it's very pretty but I would assume that a person had Chinese or Japanese heritage from just seeing the name written down.

I would pronounce it as a Latin word, May-ee and it's the genitive form of "ego" (I) meaning "of me" so I would think it slightly weird to be honest.

I would have said Meh. Whereas, May is a lovely name and it's really obvious how to spell it. I don't understand why anyone would spell a name differently to the norm. It just looks pretentious to me and causes irritation for the person with the name who has to spell it all the time.

Take it from me with a maiden surname that NOONE could ever spell even though it seems obvious to me.

All the Mei's I know are chinese and this is how its usually spelt when translated from chinese to english. The character means beautiful in both chinese and japanese(though pronounces Mi in Japanese I always thought Mimi to be a nice name for that reason ). I think if you like May, Mei's an nice alternative spelling which most people will pronounce correctly and gives the name an unusual twist.
