Aubrey is a boys name.

Elodie/Phoebe is my favourite out of those with your surname.

Jessica would be tricky if shortened to Jess with the ss sound and then Sh...

Agree that th and then sh is hard, Elizabeth, Meredith and Judith might be hard too.

Report
Lora69 · 28/03/2010 23:36

Thankyou, I like Eden but the fact that you cant really shorten it troubles me a bit as I am big on nicknames. Then again these dont have to come from the name..

I hadnt thought about the 'th' and the 'sh' being a problem! ow no! I'm not sure it is for me.. Plus she wont have that surname forever unless she choses to..

My fav's at the most are Meredith, Phoebe, Elodie, Rosalie and Evelyn. But the order I like them in changes!!! xx

Jess Shailes would prob be too 's'y said aloud you're right. Shame as Jessica was my number one for oh 15 years?! It was my favorite girls name when I was younger. The popularity has put me off a bit, but I think it goes really well with my surname..
Jessica Shailes.
Aubrey is a boys name yes, but I think it can be unisex now? I prefer it to Audrey as I love the 'b' sound and she could always get Bree as a nn too.

I just thought of a potential problem with Phoebe Shailes- sometimes Shailes can look like Snailes on paper, and we would probably use nn Bee for Phoebe instead of Phee/Phoebs, so would she get teased as Bee Snailes do you think??? Too many animals in there potentially?! I wouldnt let it put me off, we are a kooky couple and need something that reflects this, as our child will most likely be ditzy/clumsy/funny like us Lol xx

I think top of your list should be these:
Aubrey Shailes
Laila Shailes
Phoebe Shailes

It's not that I dislike them but I wouldn't choose the following because they are mega popular in my London circle of babies:
Jessica, Ava, Darcy, Annabelle

I wouldn't pick the following as they are more harsh sounding that some of the others:
Meredith, Judith, Violet, Evelyn

I like Harper but for a boy

I prefer Neve to Niamh

Amelie is pretty but I'd worry people wouldn't be sure if they heard Emily

Elodie I like but if it became Eli not so sure...

If Dorothy became Dotty I'd be upset

I think Laila is much nicer than Lola that has links to the lost innocence film

Lorella is a funny version of Loretta to me and is a bit of a mouthful. Also a bit like Cilla's loralora laughs catch phrase?

Eden, Luna, Willow, Rosalie are a bit too hippy for my taste.

Elizabeth is nice but I prefer more unusual names, good middle name though

I don't like Annie because of the Ophan film links, bit nicknamy and doesn't go so well with your surname. Or Heidi because of the film.

Yes Aubrey is a boy's name.

I like Dorothy. I think 3 syllables is nice with a one-syll surname, so Rosalie and Meredith I also like.

Report
Sazisi · 28/03/2010 23:54

Eden can be shortened to Edie

The name Shailes doesn't have any strong sounds, so you need to have at least one strong sound in the first name to give a bit of ballance - thus Lola Shailes/Amelie Shailes etc sound insubstantial.
A woman needs a good strong name
Eden, Elodie, Dorothy; don't underestimate the impotance of nice d

rosalie
elodie
or heidi

sound pretty with your surname.

definately not eden shailes, it sounds like a retirement village in america

Thanks,
Aubrey has had a very bad response on other boards- 5 disliking it and no one liking it! My OH isnt keen either so should prob take it off the list..

I like Laila, and think it looks pretty written down, not too similar to my name Lora? It sounds similar to an Oasis song, and me and OH got together at an Oasis gig!

Dorothy would get Dolly I would make sure lol!!
I think Harper is very feminine, cant see it on a boy at all!

The names that you mention as harsh i consider more as strong, and not too overly girly or frilly, but still feminine iykwim?

True Lola has very questionable connotations- i know a lot of ppl think its tarty/stripper esque etc. But then just as many seem to think its totally innocent and cute! (maybe for a baby, but adult?)

I am a bit hippy (well, free spirit and a bit i'll say eccentric but not crazy lol) so that doesnt put me off.. I like Eden and Willow for this reason (but Willow would be mean if she inherited my body type rather than her fathers!)

Thanks!! xx

LMAO @ Kalo!! A retirement village in America?!! haha. okay then maybe not.. edie is cute though. Meredith could get Edie too maybe..tho Merrie/Merry comes more naturally.

Good point Sazisi, do you think the following are too weak then;

Rosalie Shailes
Elodie Shailes
Meredith Shailes
Phoebe Shailes

As they are my fav's, are they substantial enough as you say? xx

Niamh (spelt properly like you have) and Amelie are my favourites.

Report
MinnieMalone · 29/03/2010 08:02

Very varied!

Love Rosalie, Leila (that spelling, though, not with the 'a'), Annie.

Harper is sweet and obviously has connotations of Lee.

Meredith and Phoebe could grow on me.

Niamh is nice and you're thinking about the proper spelling, which is good.

Lola is nice but very popular.

Elizabeth is nice and very classic.

Not good:
Ava, Amelie - nice but so zeitgeisty
Judith - not to my taste. Prefer Juliet.
Violet - hate those fashionable old lady names, sorry
Willo - cat's name
Eden, Luna, Lorella - awful
Heidi - too cutesy
Annabelle - too flowery, especially with the French-ified 'elle' at the endEvelyn - harsh sounding.

Report
MinnieMalone · 29/03/2010 08:03

Jessic - meh
Dorothy - very sweet, will make exception to my dislike of old lady names!

Report
Lora69 · 29/03/2010 18:24

I love Meredith, Juliet (new one!), Elodie, Phoebe, Violet maybe, maybe Rosalie tho i dislike Ros.. and I'm becoming strangely drawn to Dorothy! xxx

Heidi Shailes - not keen; very 80s

Annabelle Shailes - yep, cute and sounds nice!

Annie Shailes - cool

Lorella Shailes - please no!!!
