Help - my taste in names is pants!

Ok I've started two threads re names so far, and seems like I'm a bit rubbish!! I tend to like the nickname rather than the original and traditional name...
So rather than start a new thread for each name, here is my shortlist(ish):

Nelly/Nellie
Maisie
Milly
Maddison
Ava
Evie
Gracie
Darcy
Willow
Bracken
Autumn
Ada
Marcy
Isabella (But would be called Bella)

So straw poll? Second name will be May - not because it's 'in' but it's a family name...

Willow or Autumn (when are you due?)

Report
yama · 20/03/2010 14:32

Only one?

I'd go for Maisie.

Report
dizzydixies · 20/03/2010 14:32

I don't think its pants at all - all 3 of mine are known as nicknames however I wanted them to have choice so gave them full names on their certificated iyswim?

Nelly - I would avoid like the plague only because I was teased mercilessly about being a normal tubby child and the thought of landing any daughter of mine with being Nellie the elephant would give me the shivers

Maisie - cute for a child but a touch too cute for a grown up?
Milly - fine for a baby/child again - how about using it as a nn for Amelie/Camille etc
Maddison - fine
Ava - fine
Evie - fine but love Evangeline so would use that
Gracie - why not have Grace but call her Gracie
Willow - lovely
Bracken - touch harsh sounding, what about Briar or Blythe?
Autumn - lovely
Ada - lovely
Marcy - not keen
Isabella - lovely as is Bella

Report
grovebuster · 20/03/2010 14:37

Ooh I loved Blythe, I'd forgotten about that one!

Isabella is the nicest name.

I also like Nell - but as a nickname for Eleanor.

dizzydixies · 20/03/2010 14:39

oh oh eleanor is good, I couldn't think of anything other than Helena and Penelope which the OP didn't like

Nelly/Nellie - the tune of Neliie the elephant come to mind.
Maisie - too common
Milly - again to manny mille, maisy & maddies about.
Maddison - Chavison
Ava - nice
Evie - another ie name
Gracie - another ie mane
Darcy - I find it chavvy for some reason
Willow - stupid name for a child
Bracken - again why would you?
Autumn - No no no no no
Ada - I knew an old lady in the hospital where I worked with a prolapsed rectum called Ada so that colours my view somewhat.
Marcy - Is this even a name>
Isabella (But would be called Bella) - Being called Bella wouldn't be good if you were a rotund ugly kid - not that your kid would be but you have to look at the risks and then decide IMO.

If the middle name is definitely May i'd forget about Maisie, Milly etc. Maisie May sounds really odd to me.

Of the names you list, the ones I like are pretty popular at the moment. I wouldn't use any of the M names with May as a mn and Willow / Bracken / Autumn are a bit 90's Meh, sorry

How about Elsa? It's got a lot in common with the Nelly / Ava / Evie / Gracie / Ada / Isabella thread of names you like, in my book.

Elsa May, beautiful!

DrivenToDistraction · 20/03/2010 16:04

Oh, and your taste in names is not pants. Your DD needs a name you love, not one that pleases a bunch of random women sitting behind their computers. So there

Report
cece · 20/03/2010 16:07

Out of your list don't use the M ones to go with May as a middle name.

I like
Isabella May

Bella May

Gracie May

All three quite popular though.

How about

I love Elsa as already suggested.

Or how about?

Alice May
Esther May
Anna May
Katie May

dizzydixies · 20/03/2010 16:28

oh ffs, how can sodding teenage vampire books date a name that has been around and popular for years

Report
grovebuster · 20/03/2010 16:31

Gosh, so much to think about when choosing names! Didn't think about it with my first - well did, but posting here gives you a new perspective! Oh, and New Moon vampire books? No. Didn't know what the characters names were, don't read them, haven't seen the film!
Thanks for the suggestions, Elsa MAy sounds lovely

grovebuster - please don't worry about that Isabella is a lovely name and has been high up in popularity for a while before some teenage books came along

Report
Tortington · 20/03/2010 16:40

name attract certain connotations despite how long they have existed. I am simply pointing out that the vampire books are ver popular at the moment. if this was say 5 years ago, it wouldn't have been an issue.

so take your 'oh FFS!' and have a biscuit and a brew

Nelly/Nellie - like it short for Eleanor
Maisie - ok, bit cutesy.
Milly - OK. Prefer Polly
Maddison - a disease unfortunately. Maddie is ok though. Maddie short for Madeleine is nicer.
Ava - lovely. Popular but lovely.
Evie - as above. Very popular, but it's lovely.
Gracie - as above. Love it. Also, I think its everybody's middle name. I don't know many girls whose first name is Grace or Gracie.
Darcy - not crazy about this.
Willow - Only if you are tall AND thin. It's a bit Buffy Fan.
Bracken - no.
Autumn - I like it.
Ada - kind of like it. Not sure.
Marcy - no.
Isabella (But would be called Bella) - ok, pretty and very popular. Also, very long, so Isabel is nicer.
