Scottish mums, I need your opinion!

Any Scottish mums out there, I need your help! Me and my DH have only ever had one name in mind if we have a boy. We both love Innes, but now I've just found out that there is a new character in Rivercity with that name so I need your opions please...would you even know the names of characters in Rivercity??! Would it put you off calling your baby that name?? I'm so torn, I LOVE the name, but don't want anyone to think that I'd called my child after a character in a soap!

Nope - I don't know the characters in River City, and even if I did, I wouldn't let it put me off. Innes is a great name, I've only ever known one person with that name (and I liked him)!

I can honestly say I've never ever watched it so I wouldn't have a clue. I like the name.

thanks, that's good to know! I've never seen an episode of Rivercity either, but just happened to see in a magazine the other day that they had introduced a new 'young & cool' character called Innes. Made my heart sink! I know my my mum watches it, but wasn't sure who else might actaully care about it. I think I have a slight obsession about having a name that is a bit unusual and isn't used by every other person that you meet.

My Scottish DP says he knows 4 people called Innes, they are all folk musicians, one of them very famous in such circles. He wouldn't know about the Rivercity one.

I'd go for it, the character is unlikely to still be in the soap, or remembered in a few years time.

Or you could always move to the East coast, where no one watches Rivercity

I'd go for it, Innes is a fab name, I know several, all very nice blokes! I don't know anything about River City, doubt it'll be much of a problem.

I do have a mate who spells it Aonghas though...

I watch River City religiously

There is a character called Innes. He's the same guy who played the second Adam Barlow in Corrie a few years back. (fact fans!)

Anyway as Scottish boy names go I don't think it'll ever become too popular (lovely as it is) in the way that Euan, Ruaridh (sp?) etc has.

Besides you could come up with an alternative and the name could be introduced as a character in a soap the following week. Just go with your instincts I reckon.

River city is no way popular enough for you to worry about calling your child one of it's character's names!!!!! (and I'm giving you that opinion from Glasgow)

Am from Glasgow and have never watched River City and don't know anyone who does. Don't think it would matter too much if you used a name from it.

The only person who I know called Innes is in his 50s now. It is quite a nice unusual name but I always think of it as being quite a feminine name iyswim. If you love it then you should definitely use it

I have never watched River Shitty, do not know anybody who has.

Innes is lovely, go for it.

There are a few boys with that name through here in the West.

I'd go for it!

No one watches River Shitty unless they're probably drunk or high.

I don't watch it.

Had a similar problem. Called DS Lucas and have been asked by various people "did you name him after watching Eastenders/ Neighbours/ One Tree Hill?"

No, we just liked the name.

Don't let it put you off. Even if that's the first thought people have, in a few weeks post birth they will hear the name and think of your DS not some soap character.

It's a great name and nobody actually watches river city anyway.

Report
dizzydixies · 28/02/2010 20:34

Innes is wonderful

and no self respecting Scot wouldn't watch River City anyway

DD2 is now a character in Emmerdale so I know how you feel though

shonaspurtle · 28/02/2010 20:42

Innes is a great name. No way would someone link it with River City (no one watches it surely?)

Anyway, while not a top 10 name by a long shot, Innes isn't so unusual that it will be assumed you've named him after someone.

I watch River City, but it wouldn't stop me using the name.

I don't think the show has loads of viewers anyway. And Innes is lovely.

I have seen RC - but have lived south of the border for a long time now. I like Innes and wouldnt bother me as RC is rubbish.

CAll your child what you want to.

Bah. I wanted Innes, but DH vetoed it, saying it was very public school-y. I pointed out that the only one I'd actuallyu heard of was a postman on Lewis, but to no avail. Do it - it's a lovely name.

Report
foreverastudent · 28/02/2010 20:53

It makes me think of the Ennis character from Brockback Mountain.

I wouldn't worry about River City.

Report
poppeto · 28/02/2010 20:57

Thanks everyone! Good to see how popular River City is (I've always wondered who actually watches it!)

I think as well as being worried about people thinking I'm some kind of mad River City fan, I was concerned that using it as a name in a soap meant it was getting more popular and in a couple of years time, it would be like Jack or Lewis or something. Suppose that's a chance you take with all names though
