Opinions on Teddie for a girl?

Just wondered what the general consensus on the name Teddie for a girl are?

Cute or too cutesy?

Teddie on the birth certificate, no longer name.

FWIW, for me it's the double whammy of being too cutesy and also primarily a masculine nn. I quite like Ted/Tedy as a nn for Theodora, but I wouldn't have it as a bc name. This is just opinion, of course, and you should take it as just that!

I think teddie is a nickname only. Needs to have a proper name imo

I should probably say also, this isn't for me. Asking for a friend who isn't sure!

I think there are so many boy Teddys around now that it wouldn't be good.

No. Ultra sugary.

I love Theodora which would give you the nickname Teddie but as a name on it's own?

No.

I wouldn't have wanted to be called Teddie at any point of my life.....toddler, teen, adult.....would you?

I think it's okay as a nickname, but Theodora on the birth certificate would be better.

(Actually, it's really good, as she could be Thea or Dora for short, as well, if she chose.)

Well I have to see I agree with you all. It's too cutesy and I can't see an adult woman wanting to use it. God knows it's hard enough to be taken seriously as a woman in business sometimes without being saddled with a name like Teddie.

Her baby, her decision ultimately... But she isn't sure so perhaps still hope for poor baby girl...!

I like Teddy for a girl (dislike the -ie spelling), but ONLY as a nickname. It would make a sweet, tomboyish nickname for Theodora or some other longer name, but I do think it's a bit too "cute" for a full name.

Awful! It's not a proper name and it also makes me think of naff Ann summers sex underwear

Queenbean · 29/08/2016 11:13

Actually I could see a very posh horsey type called Teddie being a barrister or something

Glenn Close played a character called Teddie Barnes in Jagged Edge so it's a known name for a female, even if mostly in America. It sounds like it would be short for something, maybe Edwina or Theodora or similar.

Not a fan. Both too cutesy for an adult, and with masculine associations (e.g. Teddy being a nn for Edward and Theodore). Plus the whole teddie underwear association too.

add pink to teddie to make sure we know it's a girl

Not keen really. It's ok as a nickname but not as a birth name. Bet she changes her name when she gets old enough

Report
therootoftheroot · 29/08/2016 11:18

also for a girl...a teddy is a type of sexy underwear

Odd. As a nickname for Edwina or Theodora maybe, just maybe. But Teddie as a birth certificate name: NO!

aisatsana · 29/08/2016 12:44

It's bad enough for a boy to have as a horrible name, let alone for a girl to have as a horrible boy's name.

Much too cutesy, sorry!

Ridiculous to have it as a name on a birth certificate. Fine as a nn if that what your friend wants to do but to give a girl a cutesy male and not very nice name is just a bit mean IMO.

I think it's fine, but then I don't get the name angst at all on MN. If you think about people in the public eye, or even just those with professional jobs (the Holy Grail test to see if a name is acceptable on MN), they have tonnes of different names. If you watch an film and look at the names scrolling past in the credits, you'll see there's almost no names that are a barrier to employment. Teddie could be a barrister, it's fine! When you meet someone in person, you just get to know them, name and all.

The exception is rude names, but then I know someone who has been a Willy all his life, and he's done fine!

I was browsing the list of female members of parliament recently (for work) and in among the Chloes, Catharines and so forth, there's a Sheryll, a Tulip, a Mims and so forth, all names that would probably be rejected on MN but haven't stopped anyone being in power. Lots of Helens for some reason.
