As a boys name how does Ramsay sound? There's a special reason why I would like the name. It's just whether a boy would be

Ramsay Leonard or
James Ramsay

Basically can Ramsay be a first name or better as a middle?

MrsLeighHalfpenny Tue 24-May-16 18:15:51

Neither. It's a surname isn't it?

twolittleboysonetiredmum Tue 24-May-16 18:16:34

If anyone you know watches Game of Thrones they'll find it hard to not grimace when you say it. It's a good name though. Just a horrible current character!!

EssentialHummus Tue 24-May-16 18:17:39

It's a surname to me too, and not brilliant associations. I'd have it as a middle name I you're dead set on it.

treaclesoda Tue 24-May-16 18:18:14

I know men called Ramsay, although no little boys. But then round these parts it's quite traditional for a son to be given his mother's surname as a first name.

NO
Game of Thrones
Just no

I would always think of Ramsay Bolton and how eeevil he is. (Sorry, Game of Thrones reference).

AuntieStella Tue 24-May-16 18:18:41

Avoid if your surname is Street!

It flows well, as first name, with Scottish sounding surnames (am I being influenced by MacDonald?) and I think I'd stick in in the middle for others.

Game of Thrones

Lock your knives away...

TheVillageTaxpayer Tue 24-May-16 18:19:44

It makes me think "JonBenet."

Or "Ramses."

MadamDeathstare Tue 24-May-16 18:20:11

I thought Game of Thrones too. Ramsey Bolton is evil.

There is also Ramsey MacDonald (McDonald?) so it has been used as a first name in the past.

Flayers gonna flay flay flay flay...

Lweji Tue 24-May-16 18:23:19

Duvet
grin

I wouldn't. Or just as a middle name and not tell anyone for a few years.

lilydaisyrose Tue 24-May-16 18:24:57

I don't watch GoT but do love Scottish boys names - so LOVE Ramsay!

MazzleDazzle Tue 24-May-16 18:24:59

It's unlikely any of your future son's contemporaries will get the Game of Thrones reference.

Ramsey as a first name makes me think of Ramsey MacDonald, former Prime Minister, though only because he was born fairly close to where I live!

I like both of your choices BTW.

4point2children Tue 24-May-16 18:25:38

I think it's fine I actually really like this now I have heard it, it's your child and if you like that name and feel it suits him then why not 😃

TheVeryHungryPreggo Tue 24-May-16 19:10:02

"It's unlikely any of your future son's contemporaries will get the Game of Thrones reference..."

Is it though? I mean, the books have been around for 20 years with a very loyal following. In modern fantasy terms, it's about equivalent to Lord of the Rings... I used to read George R R Martin's blog (where he occasionally talked about all the children named for his books) many many years ago and there are easily some 15 year old Aryas and Khaleesis out there. The books have a huge impact, and are likely to still be read for many years.

I should think the reference will be made by quite a few of his contemporaries heading into their teens - and their parents when he starts school.

AnotherEmma Tue 24-May-16 19:11:19

Yes, and he is likely to interact with people older than him! Teachers, friends' parents, and, as an adult, colleagues and older friends.

Sounds the same as Ramzi which is a not uncommon name in Arabic.

weebarra Tue 24-May-16 19:21:16

It's quite a common Scottish name. I know a few.

NataliaOsipova Tue 24-May-16 19:24:43

I'm now thinking of the 'Neighbours' theme song.... Sorry!

OllyBJolly Tue 24-May-16 19:26:40

I know several. I like it as a first name.

(Just be aware that the (first Labour) prime minister was James Ramsay MacDonald if you are going for James Ramsay).

LadyAntonella Tue 24-May-16 19:48:58

There was another 'GoT name' on here a while ago and I said "no one will ever make that link so just go for it".

Ramsay Bolton on the other hand is one of the main (or most seen) characters in GoT and he is a disgusting one at that - I stopped watching all the scenes with him in them and eventually just stopped watching the show altogether as I just couldn't stomach it and I'm not all that squeamish.

I couldn't use the name sadly for that reason, though it is quite a nice name!

kiki22 Tue 24-May-16 20:14:42

Ramsey Bolton game of thrones makes this name a huge no for me, my son has the same as 2 characters in 2 diff very popular shows I'm often asked if hes named after them its never bothered me but Ramsey is a notorious character even by GOT standards hes evil.

Google Ramsey Bolton baby dog.....
