And I am also reminded of Coyote Ugly where the lovely Violet was nicknamed Jersey

I think you would need to be American to have the clothing association. If people asked me the top 10 things to call a 'jumper', I would never even think of the word 'Jersey'!

I'm English and "jumper" was the first thing that came to mind. Closely followed by the Channel Islands.

I think a UK based child would get teased due to the clothing and cow associations.

If you like islands then Iona, Alderney, Skye, Taransay, Lindisfarne could all be girl's names. Arran, Lewis etc for boys.

There's also a Cardigan Island.

Laughable. Absolutely laughable. Like the previous poster, I'd have gone for 'Pullover', myself. "Aunty B, meet my twins Pullover and Jersey. And here is my older son Sweater (by name, and by nature, teehee!), and the baby, little Cardigan."
Oh, for goodness sake, have some mercy on the child. Before you set off down a new route, might I just point out that kitchen implements are not good names either - 'Deep Fat Fryer' and 'Fish Slice' are definitely out.
