Magnus?

Currently 11 weeks with dc1 so not really an urgent thread but DH and I are considering Magnus for a boy. I like it, but am worried that its a bit too 'old man' ish. What do you think?
We also both like Ruairidh although I think that even in Scotland people will struggle to spell it. DH likes Charlie and I like Stanley but we've each vetoed the other's choice with those! If not Magnus, what else might we like?

Are you from Iceland??

I love Magnus! When I went to Orkney there were lots of places that had childrens' names on, and there were always a couple of Magnuses.

What about Eirik (Erik / Eric is a bit Simon Cowell!) or Ivar? Both Norse names.

Magnus is much better than all the other names you've mentioned. I like Rory but dislike the roo-ree pronunciation of Ruairidh.

I picture a Magnus to be a super cool, super handsome, human rights lawyer with greying temples and a way with the ladies.

I can even imagine him as a yoghurt splattered toddler who has yet to express an interest in the law!

Magnus sounds a little hefty to me.

I associate it with magnitude and magnums.

No we're not from Iceland! We're both Scottish. Not a fan of Eric although I like Ivor. Thanks for the suggestions! I had never thought of the connection with magnitude actually! Although it doesn't put me off.

I bloody love Magnus.

I keep suggesting it to DH but it is the name of his boss and he thinks it would look a little odd to name his PFB after him.

Please use Magnus, for me Grin

I adore it. DH not so much. I always loved it and the little boy in Borgen sealed the deal for me.

My BIL is called Magnus, DS and his other DNs call him uncle Mags.

I think it's a really nice name.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 17:02

Belazu84 I could never pronounce it as they did on Borgen. It sounds a bit like Ma-noo.

Really like Magnusm and prefer it to your other suggestions. For me it seems like quite a serious, 'weighty' name though - no bad thing, but can imagine it better on a grown man than a child (probably just haven't met enough young Magnuses!). Another potential drawback might be the lack of obvious nicknames - Mags? Maggie?! - although having said that nicknames aren't compulsory!

Other suggestions:
Fergus
Marcus
Linus
Struan
Stellan
Lars

Like Magnus, think it sounds very cute for a little boy and strong for a man - winner!

Like Magnus. Angus and Fergus too, though they're more definitely Scottish than Nordic. Not keen on Ivor/Ivar but love Gregor, Innes and Seamus which for me have a similar feel.

I love innes and struan but DH doesn't want a name that could be a surname. temps, I was thinking maybe Gus as a nickname? I do quite like Gregor though, might run that past DH. Magnus is still feeling like a winner though, thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

Charles Dickens wrote that Magnus is "a very fine name indeed" (Pickwick Papers) and I am inclined to agree.

Cute on a little boy, nn Gus? And as it means "The Greatest" we should expect him to become a great man.

I really like Magnus.

Squoosh you are v. perceptive, as always. The traditional north Scottish pronounciation of Magnus was Mann-oos, as in MacManus.

Magnus is still a good name, ideally pronounced without the 'g'.
