Josephine or Iris

I've already posted 'bout Josephine, I particularly like the nn Posy.

Howeer,one of my all-time favourite names is Iris, cool and classy I feel, less cutesy than the very sweet Posy and needs no nickname.

I've already got a Violet so would that be a charming floral combo or too twee? My feeling is it doesn't really matter but I'd be interested to hear opinions.

Be so much easier if baby's a boy, dd and I have both been set on Hector ever since expecting dd1.

Definitely Josephine - a beautiful name that is also so cool as Josie, and sweet as Fifi or Posy - I met a Seph the other day too. Lots of potential. I do think Violet and Iris would be just too twee and agree about the clang of Vi and I.

Josephine is lovely. I have two aunties called this and love all the contractions, esp Posy though I had not heard that before.

And Hector is cool. I only know one, but really like one.

I like Violet and Josephine too. They complement each other and avoid being matchy matchy. And I also love Hector.

Iris Murdoch springs to mind with Iris. Which is a good thing. There was a dreadful Josephine at school so would be an easy decision for me!

I really like Josephine - nickname Posie or Jo - lovely! Works well in most languages.

Iris is less feminine imo and doesn't translate as well.

I like both names. For me, Iris has the edge BUT I don't think it goes with Violet as they are too similar in colour. I know irises can be any colour but it's the blue ones that most people think of first. So in this case I'd go for Josephine.

My DD's middle name is Josephine (after my Grandmother) and when people hear it they, almost without exception, have said 'that's a beautiful name'. It would have been her first name but we have a very long Italian surname so it would have been too much of a mouthful.

I love Iris, my sister's horse is called Hector but I still really like it. She called her dog Isla so I took that off my girls name list

Look like Josephine's winning. Plus did you know that Napoleon's Josephine was obsessed with violets? I stumbled across the most lovely little perfumery on Columbia road (next to the flower market) before dd was born and bought a violet-based scent inspired by the lady, called,of course, 'Josephine', it's become my favourite as I'm a bit of a violet fanatic too.

Also inspired by the fabulous Josephine Baker.

However, tjand, our surname is a four syllabled Nigerian one, so it will be a long name too!

Love them both, they were both on my list. Are you bothered about name meanings at all? Iris means 'rainbow', whereas apparently Josephine means 'he will enlarge'.

I LOVE Josephine. I wanted it at least for a middle name but DH nixed.

Iris is nice but extremely popular, if you care about that.
