AIBU?

in wanting to change our car?

i have just watched thye C5 rear end crash on a zafira and it has worried me as dd1 sits in one of the boot seats. i have asked dh if we can change our car for something like a multipla whyen we can afford to, and he wonty even discuss it. have told him that dd1 is to sit in the front from now on unless no other option.

mind you, is the ront seat, with an airbag which cant be disabled, child on booster as about 7cm aways from bneing legl height, safer than those rear seats?

its a mobility car which we are signed for for another 2 years.

I don't think you are being unreasonable and I will watch with interest.

I have persauded dh that we need to change cars for the arrival of dc3 ( we have a cmax) we may, if I got slim fitting seats fit 3 across the back but they would be very close together and in the case of a side impact possibly buckle crunch rendering the car seat useless - if it is unbukled to fly around the car.

I'm currently looking at a Kia Sedona ( we want 7 seats as my parents also have to be transported occasionally) or a galaxy/ sharan/ allhambra again with the larger sturdier seats.

I don't think the front seat with the airbag is the way to go tho'

Good luck

we only do at weekiends. i had to replace the car seats in nov after a crash, and whilst i'm happy with the younger two's seats, (britax and maxi cosi caBRIO) I AM NOT ON DD1+2, AS I COULDNT AFFORD TO REPLACE THEIR SEATS LIKE FOR LIKE, so they are now on boosters atm and not high back boosters. wil get dd1 a HBB next week for the rear seat, and then dd2 one the following week. we have to weait to get the money back for the seats, as dh is on mobility insurence and they dont cover car seats, and the lorry driver was from an eastern european company, and they only found his insurennce company last week. the 4 seats + base for dd4 seat costs me £350 at the time.

Doris have you looked at the crash test info for the Sedona? We had one and I only came across the info after it was gone but in a crash the driver isn't protected at all.

THe major problem with the Zafira seat is that the persons head came above the top of the seat. Because they are not proper seats like a Galaxy or something they are less suitable for taller children or adults. Whilst they are not great, the film would have been different if they had put smaller children in the seats - but less dramatic.

I would be interested in getting some PROPER advice about what happens in a crash (without the need to make an interesting tv show) - bear in mind that the truck was doing a very high speed and the car was still - that does not really happen that often IRL.

My husband won't entertain a 7 seater for this reason he wants rear shunts to crush the boot only.
We're getting a FR-V with the 2 rows of three and hoping we don't get twins lol

YOu need information about the crumple zones really. SOme 7 seaters include the back seats in the crumple zone (the zafira includes about 1/2 or it I think) some 7 seaters do not include any of the rear seat are in the crumple zone but I don't know which ones they are these days as most of the models have changed.

YANBU on the safety aspect but YABalittlebitU re changing it outside of the 2yr tie in period which will presumably incur additional cost ? I can understand DH being reluctant in these frugal times.

If no extra costs then fine, YANBU.

The 2001 model seems to be a little below average but I can't find any reviews for the moedl realeased about then which is apaprently better? PC playing up so not much working ATM search-wise.

Even the 2001 version rates better than our car though, and the fuel economy isn't that far off doubled!

OP how many DC's have you got. Do you need a people carrier or 7 seater??? Can't understand anyone with more than 2-3 children would want anything other than an ordinary car! I have a Peugot 207 it has just as much room in the back as a people carrier, i.e. seats three people all with belts and has quite a large boot.

Catweasle have just looked at the NCAP stuff and the driver protection is much improved ( although not perfect) in the newer version. But thanks for the tip off!
