Could dragons really exist?

I am friends with someone of viking descent, and she told me that her ancestors were friends with dragons, just like How To Train Your Dragon! I find that really cool that dragons might not be that imaginary.

Um well, I mean they could?

It is kinda weird how so many cultures continents away from each other all have dragon mythology, and kinda like different species of dragons depicted.

So yeah dragons are real. Why not!

Probably most people in England are of viking descent. Thousands of them colonised northern England. There were viking settlements around Dublin. Some of their descendents will have moved to England in the intervening millennium. More vikings colonised northern France and these people's descendents invaded England as the Normans.

One viking a thousand years ago probably has thousands of modern descendents. I have zero idea what my antecedents were doing in 973AD but it probably involved digging in soil and dying of unpleasant diseases.

Could dragons exist in the millions of years the earth existed and left no fossils/trace - yes possibly. During the very short period of human existence when we have had sophisticated weapons - no.
The evangelical movement has tried to dismiss dinosaur bones as dragon bones to disprove evolution.
Why people make this shit up when there are so many incredibly animals that do exist and are becoming extinct I do not know.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 19/11/2024 07:53

It's a cool idea, but when you're talking about ancestors thousands of years ago you cannot know much at all about what or who they were 'friends with '. I highly doubt they had dragon pals, though.

I think it's possible that people saw the odd dinosaur skeleton or bones at va tous points globally and the myth spread.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 19/11/2024 07:53

I suspect the dragon concept came from dinosaur fossils.

Large, vaguely lizard-like animals have existed. Large, vaguely lizard-like flying animals have also existed. Large, vaguely lizard-like flying animals with the proportions of Toothless and the other dragons in How To Train Your Dragon couldn't exist as they don't have big enough wings to support their weight. And I can't see any practical way of any animal being able to breath fire. Or, at least, being able to breath fire more than once.

BilboBlaggin · 19/11/2024 07:56

Well, we had dinosaurs once, and we still have Komodo Dragons in parts of the world, so it's a possibility. I doubt they breathed fire though.

ReadWithScepticism · 19/11/2024 07:56

Well, there are Komodo dragons and monitor lizards and crocodiles and alligators. So in one very boring sense, dragons do exist.

But it is natural to say 'oh, but they aren't actually dragons because actual dragons are fictional. That makes perfect sense to me: It is part of the concept 'dragon' that it is a mythical/fictional beast. So any really existing alleged dragon would not really be a dragon at all.

TheWonderhorse · 19/11/2024 07:58

Of course there are dragons. All Welsh people know that! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

CamelTail · 19/11/2024 07:58

Considering most deities were aliens, why wouldn't it be possible some brought dragons with them on occasion

BrunetteHarpy · 19/11/2024 07:59

Well, my ancestors were communing with unicorns, so am much more special, clearly.

OAPapparently · 19/11/2024 07:59

I think they could have existed. DH says if a large animal ate stones/rock to help with digestion (if their digestive system was different) then theoretically the rocks rubbing together could create friction to make smoke/fire. Also they could have just had very hot breath that created steam.
Dinosaurs existed - huge massive things that sometimes flew, so I don’t see it as that absurd that dragons may have existed too.
The planet is ancient, anything could have happened in that time and a lot of cultures reference them.

DrZaraCarmichael · 19/11/2024 08:02

"Of viking descent" - nah. She will not have any proof of what whatsoever. Vikings weren'r recording their births/marriages/deaths 1000 years ago to let you trace back properly.

Dinosaurs were sometimes big and sometimes flew, but the really big ones did not fly.

If dragons existed, do you not think someone, somewhere would have found bones?

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2024 08:02

How much cooler is it that the human imagination can produce these fantastic creatures Dragon?
(For their ultimate evolution, obviously you should refer to my username.Grin)

Iheartmysmart · 19/11/2024 08:07

I wish they did as I’d like a smallish one as a pet. It could sit on my shoulder and stare menacingly at annoying people on teams calls. And possibly make me toast using its fire breath.

And you know this first hand as you were there….. 🙄 it’s people like you that make people question everything as it’s ridiculous to assume you are an authority or in fact anyone is on how the world was thousands of years ago.

Cherryana · 19/11/2024 08:14

I definitely think they were dinosaurs.

We have a local legend about a Wooly mammoth being caught in a village.
They say they have debunked it but ‘they’ were not there!!

Tina159 · 19/11/2024 08:17

Why are people suggesting they might have existed? We've known they didn't/don't exist since the 18th century! Next people will be saying maybe mermaids exist or fairies.

OneBlackHeart · 19/11/2024 08:19

There's that video floating about of a man saying the T rex was a dragon. Compares the skeleton with that of an ostrich and the arms/wings look the same

Wtf??? Is your DH ok?
