AIBU?

To think size 2!!! is extreme???

Just watching the tv and an advert for a catalogue came on. The clothes are from a size 2!!!! Surely selling clothes that small its encouraging people to not eat and get even slimmer. I was a size 10 before I had ds and was told by many people I looked to thin. I cant even imagine what a size 2 woman would look like.

Is it an American size 2?

Still tiny though... although my old flatmate used to wear extremely tiny clothes, but she was very very short (I am 5ft and towered over her)

kayzr · 04/02/2008 09:07

Must be US Size 2 = UK size 6.

Breathe, m'dear!

Were they American sizes or UK? American sizes are 2 sizes smaller than UK, IIRC. i.ie the 'size zero" they talk about is equivalent to a UK size 4.

oh, sorry.

I think zero is meant to be a size 4 but Im not sure

sizes have changed over the years anyway. twenty years ago I would easily have been a size 14, now I can fit into an english size 12 no problem.

US size zero (for information) -

Bust size: 31.5 inches (80 cm);

Waist size: 22 inches (59 cm);

Hip size: 32 inches (82 cm).

It must have been American, I couldn't imagine being a size 6 in a million years

They really do need to be more careful witht he whole size zero marketing. A friend of mine is having so many problems with her little girl. She is only 14yo and so ill with anorexia - she is at the hospital or clnic every other day at least currently. Ses eats so little and works out constantly when not at school. And her mum is so normal and done nothing to cause this. But girls just seem tot hink they have to fit some prescribed image - and the amrketing of some companies of these new tiny sizes really isn't helping.

Have to say that my friend was impressed with a couple of the high street shops though who refuse to stock such small sizes - size 6 was the smallest and then in very limited styles - and their justification for not stocking was that they didn't want to encourage irls and women to be in those sizes.

lapinindetention - thats so depressing looking at those measurements.
Didnt Kylie have a 20in waist when she did that big tour?

My mum is a size 6 - it's just the way she is.

I don't know about Kylie... I know she wore a corset, and said the news reports about it giving her a 16 inch waist were rubbish. She's v v short as well .

I had a 22 inch waist - when I was 16 and swimming every day. Now I think my thighs are bigger than that

I had a small waist when I was at school.

Lapin, those size zero meassurements you quoted used to be a standard UK size 6/8.

As for shops refusing to stock small sizes I think that is incredibly unfair for those of us who are naturally small.

YABU. Some people are small. Pre children I was a UK 6 (US 2) and I looked fine. I am now an 8-10 but I have a pair of Next jeans size 6 and they are enormous on me. I don't starve myself, I'm just a small person and I have as much right to be catered for as people of normal size, the overweight, the obese and the morbidly obese. People are very quick to complain if clothes don't come in size 18+ but as a rash generalisation, unless you are very tall and big boned you are likely to have life limiting obesity at this size.

(Disclaimer- I know you can be big and be fit and lots of skinny people don't do excercise and are less healthy than big people who do excercise. I agree that if you are 6 feet tall then you probably wouldn't look good as a size 2)

yes, I agree mercy, I always thought
a size 12 was 26inch waist;
size 10: 24 inch waist,
and size 8 22 inch waist

it's changed a lot over the years

Are they Mercy? that would make sense, I was about an 8 when I was at school (in fact, I was an 8 when I was 23 and living with my ex who always told me I was fat - but that's a whole different thread!)

I do agree that there are people who are naturally that slim, and of course you need clothes - but I think the fashion companies often use models with extreme figures. Size 6 ladies - are you 6 foot tall? because a size 6 on a 5 footer is a completely different thing to a size 6 on a 6 footer.

My niece is a 12, and slim as slim - she is very tall.

My SIL and her win sister are size 6 that is just the way they are, fit and healthy, they struggle to get clothes but SIL does take adavantage and buys teen clothes

Agree with Hula it is unfair on those of us who are slim. I have trouble maintaining my weight at times as it has a habit of falling off and while I am an 8 there are some shops that I have trouble buying in, especially with the trend of sizing large so people feel that they are slimmer than they are.

So I welcome places that stock small sizes although I do recognise the terrible problems we have in this country to do with self image and the need to be thin.

I'm half an inch off 6ft tall, and if I was a size 6/8 I would problaby look anorexic.
I hav ehowever problably gone to the other end of the scale as I now usually get into an 18!
However, my GP has told me I need to lose - wait for this - 5 stone, which would make me 9stone!

I agree that people who are naturally thin should be able to get clothes but everyone is so obsessed with how thin we are meant to be. My friend hardly eats a thing and when anyone mentions it she says "well didnt you see X, Y or Z in the paper the other day? It said they looked fat" I think it was someone from Girls Aloud. She looks like a skeleton and will only drink slim fast.
