To think Tory party is not ready for a non-white PM

While all this talk about Rishi goes on, I just can't see it happening. Too much of the tory party is old english and super duper white

this from an independent headline - The Conservative leadership contest is dominated by white men who've furthered inequality in various departments. The winner will be chosen by a membership who are 71 per cent male, 97 per cent white and 44 per cent aged over 65

As opposed to the open-minded, liberal, tolerant labour and Lib Dem parties, who have had scores of non-white, and non-male leaders?

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2022 18:56

Think they will give less of a shit about their colour and more about whether they'll let them keep their wealth and make more of it.

Good point. Maybe question should have been UK is not ready for non-white PM?

I disagree and think they are ready. But he's one of those fined at Partygate and should really have resigned then.

MsFogi · 08/07/2022 18:56

I think the issue is that the country is not ready for a billionaire PM during a time of economic crisis with millions relying on food banks, most people panicking about energy bills, inflation and interest rate rises.

user1497207191 · 08/07/2022 18:57

There are many reasons why Rishi shouldn't be PM, his skin colour is the least important/relevant of them!

SnowyLamb · 08/07/2022 18:57

I think the parliamentary party and the electorate are more than ready. You could be right about party members, if my local Conservative club is anything to go by.

Mums1234 · 08/07/2022 18:57

I disagree. Rishi Sunak was given the best job as chancellor and most people like him. Most people don't care about skin colour.

Crankley · 08/07/2022 18:58

Good comment Artesia, I think it's nonsense to suggest that.

picklemewalnuts · 08/07/2022 18:58

I was horrified to see someone making this argument on FB today. Surely just saying it endorses racism?

Ivgotasecretcanyoukeepit · 08/07/2022 18:59

As opposed to the white washed parties of Labour and the Liberal Democrats? At least the Conservative party is more diverse.

The poster above hits the nail on the head with this

I think the issue is that the country is not ready for a billionaire PM during a time of economic crisis with millions relying on food banks, most people panicking about energy bills, inflation and interest rate rises.

I'm sorry what the what?

Question, why did his wife pay her millions of £ in taxes just to keep him in his job worth a fraction of that?

EngTech · 08/07/2022 19:00

The system will decide who is the next Prime Minister

RedWingBoots · 08/07/2022 19:04

@alphae and @MsFogi have explained why Rishi Sunak isn't suitable to be PM. And it is nothing to do with skin colour.

There are other candidates who are indicating they will stand who also aren't white. While they weren't fined, they are all unfortunately tainted by their association with Boris Johnson.

PlanetNormal · 08/07/2022 19:04

Given that Labour & the Lib Dems between them have had a grand total of zero women leaders and zero women chancellors, Lefties should probably keep quiet about diversity & representation in politics…

Ciela · 08/07/2022 19:04

As a white female and member of the conservative party under the age of 40 I will vote for whoever I believe is the best candidate regardless of colour, age or religion.

Incidentally at the last election my vote was for Sajid Javid.

We were also the first party to ever elect a female as party leader in 1975 and the first to have a female prime minister elected.

JuneWind · 08/07/2022 19:04

What is ‘super duper white’? Is it some special level of whiteness that you can achieve?

I don’t think Rishi’s skin colour will be a problem for Conservatives at all, this is the Conservative party that has given the country 2 female Prime Ministers even though most are male.

The current cabinet is/was made up of a lot of people of varying skin colours and ethnicities.

Sarahcoggles · 08/07/2022 19:05

Rishi Sunak terrifies me. My understanding was that one of the things he fell out with Boris over was that Boris wouldn't agree to the cuts he wanted to make. Rishi strikes me as the archetypal Tory who is minted himself, and slashes public spending because he doesn't give a shit about anyone else.
Javid scares me too. I knew his brother when I was a teenager and they were absolutely not a rich family. I'd worry he'd have the attitude of "well if I can do it, so can anyone else", and use that as a reason to cut public spending.

Lib Dems had a woman leader. The one before Ed Davey, their current leader.

She was gotten rid off over a local issue in her constituency in 2019. If you are a Lib Dem MP it really pays to not piss your constituents off.

Rachel Reeves is the shadow chancellor.

MintJulia · 08/07/2022 19:08

Actually I think you're wrong.

The Tories will choose the person they consider the most effective (whether you agree with their choice or not).

The Labour Party are still struggling to allow women in their club, still stuck in the 1950s. It's sad but they are ridiculous.

The party membership has only selected one leader. Johnson, so that went well.
