AIBU?

Soda stream

AIBU to want (need?) a soda stream? I drink fizzy water "as a treat" but the number of plastic bottles in my recycling bin is dreadful for the green credentials of our household. We are managing to move away from a lot of other plastic packaging, so would this help too?

How else could I drink shiny fizzy water without feeling bad for the planet?

I got one just before lockdown and haven't regretted it for a second. They aren't that expensive if you get the basic one (which is fine) and they come with nice reusable bottles. You can also exchange the gas cylinders at Argos so those are being reused too. Do it!

Thanks @bridgetreilly - very good to hear you didn't regret it! Might I ask which basic one you got? I figure if I get one without any bells and whistles - if the rest of the household want flavours, they can arrange those themselves? 🤣

I always wanted one when I was a child in the 70s, I finally got one last year. We are very pleased with it, saves money and cuts down on cans and bottles.

I had one years ago but wasn't keen on the flavourings that went it.

I aslo bought one at the start of lockdown as we jut couldn't get fizzy water and it's fab. Ive bought a spare cartridge so we are not without but noe had to use it yet

I use it to dilute cans of Limonata and Rhubarb drink

I also got one in lockdown when Ocado stopped delivering large bottles. Only use it for fizzy water and it's perfect - keep a bottle in the fridge so it's cold and then just fizz on demand.

Mine was the Spirit - not cheap, bit must have covered the cost by now as I drink 2 litres a day in general. I get the replacement cylinders by post - then when they're empty I just send them back free of charge and get my deposit back. Very easy!

Very pleasing to hear that they dont just disappear into the back of a cupboard - could I ask which one you have? Thanks!

You can compare all the different types of machines on the website

I got this one in this colour, it is called the classic. I bought it from the official soda stream website.

We have one and it's honestly life changing (okay, life changing in a very small way). Way less plastic, and it's so nice to constantly be able to have cold fizzy water.

We’ve had ours about 6 years and it’s brilliant. You won’t regret it. It’s too tall to go in a cupboard so lives in a corner on the kitchen counter.

We did exactly the same OP. I hated seeing the plastic pile up, even if we were recycling it all. We bought a sodastream 2 months ago and love it.

I'm thinking of it to cut down on plastic/ cost of fizzy drinks for older DC. If you buy the syrups anyone are they expensive?

DH got me the Spirit set last year and it's worth every penny. I don't use the syrups but if DH or the kids fancy some flavour then we just use normal squash or cordial.

I used to get gas refills at Argos but once lockdown hit I started a subscription directly with Sodastream. I just send them back when they're empty and get sent another pack of 4.

I got one a few years ago and use it all the time.
I didn't like any of the soda stream syrups, but it works perfectly well with regular dilutable syrups (and they are a lot cheaper).

Mostly I use it for making wine spritzers or just fizzy water.

I use my soda stream every day for fizzy water - I don't do the flavours.

We have a basic one, and use it every day. the gas cylinders have just gone up in price by about 30% Shock but we are cutting down on the plastic I guess. We don't get the concentrates.

Has anyone managed to put fizz into wine using a sodastream? I tried once without success but would love to know if there is a knack to it Grin

.. we have the drinkmate one and use it many times a day.

Sign up to the sodastream cylinder replacement via post.

Don't use the syrups but use a lot of cordial - particularly elderflower!

I bought ours about 3 years ago - I bought the Crystal one, which comes with glass bottles. I bought extra bottles, so we now have 6 bottles. Means we always have 6 bottles of cold water in the fridge.

It was an expensive outlay to start with, but saves so much in the long run as well as cutting down massively on plastic.

If I was going to buy again, I'd buy one from aarke as they're much more stylish than any of the Sodastream machines. (They're also compatible with SS gas cylinders)

Also love mine. I have a terrible sparking water habit. 3 ish litres a day. That's a lot of plastic.

I have the sparkle plan for gas and it will last me exactly the year, no one else in the family drinks it though.

All the syrups are grim.

DH uses it everyday for bubbly water and a Gas canister last us about 4-5 months.

I'm getting one for christmas, and am very excited! Also getting due to being a big fizzy water drinker and being fed up of all the bottles filling the recycling!

We did it once for fun, and it worked surprisingly well with Blue Nun as a dessert wine. Inspired by Heston Blumenthal
