AIBU?

thinking I'm old because I don't know what Facebook is?

I feel so old! My sister (who is only 18 months my junior) has just introduced me to Facebook and it seems the whole world and his dog is on there...including my dp! Does anyone else feel out of touch with the youth of today even though they're relatively young?!?!? Is this what having children does to you? By the way both myself and my partner are 30.

I'm an old fart - I can be heard pondering at the pub "What's all this malarkey about facebook? - what is wrong with email / texts/ meeting up for a few bevvies. I don't geddit"

Actually, seriously could someone come along and explain to me and MammaT what is the point of facebook?

Some online community where you can share photos of yourself and everyone else you know...? And how do they have the time to set it all up and check on it regularly?? Don't these people have T.V.s, friends in the flesh, games, CHILDREN????

It's like having everything altogether in one place. Mind you, can't find many real life people on there but that's becaue I'm old and women marry

Isn't it like just doing a glorified high tech round robin (naffola!)

Noooooo.

Convince me otherwise

Because you talk to/play with/mess about with individual people not everyone all at once. But you can be round robiny if you wanted to be I suppose. I'm at the point of being frustrated with it now because people I want to find aren't on there

My sister was saying it's hard to find women as they change their name... I think it has seriously boggled my tired and weary mind... I thought it would be fun looking for people I went to school with but couldn't think of any that I wanted to cyber-spy on!

Its quite fun to see which of your friends know each other, and a good way to keep up with people who are aquaintences rather then good friends, and who you might not normally stay in touch with.

There are a whole lot of 'aplications' you can add to your page - things that enable your friends to send you virtual gifts, throw virtual sheep at you and other random stuff like that, but I agree that those features are for the child-free and time-wealthy (mind you, here we all are gas bagging on MN...)

you can't usually 'spy' on people either, as most people set up their profile so that it can oly be seen by approved friends.

I remain...unconvinced

its fun, but no bad thing to stay away...another time waster.

But facebook is for the older person, I'm 35 and fell in love with it a few weeks ago, I have since fallen out of love with it, and we are now occasional friends, but till,, it is for the 30+ age group, and apparently myspace if for the yoof

as a recent convert the joy of facebook has nothing to do with round robins or photos, It's seeing who people have got listed as their friends, you end up following a whole chain of people and then finding some former colleague you haven't seen for a couple of years. No-one has got any real detail on their profile. maybe where they work and roughly where they live - but that's about it. as a former scpetic I;d recommend it - the novelty wears off pretty quickly but fun while it lasts

I still check on FB everyday, takes less time than MN really. I like it cause you keep in touch with people who you dont nesscarily have the time to email call individually. Also like traceing friends. Dont really understand what the security risks with it are though. I mean , who is stupid enough to put personal details on it and let all and sundry have a look.

I still can't use it properly, I've a few friends on it, could add more if I made the effort but can't be arsed tbh. A bit too teenagery and "ooh be my friend" or "look at all the friends I've got" and as for the stoopid surveys and writing on your funwall...........ahem rant over.

I'm a little older than OP, I know what it is but just don't get the point of it - making me a grumpy old woman I believe.

Oh and I only really went on it to see what other Mn'rs looked like and to imagine it would give me some cred by dropping it into convo's......... Can't believe I just typed that.

Tee hee! That's hilarious Mhamai! I feel I should get one now just so I can drop it in to conversations!

I suppose it makes me feel really old cos my young cousins are on there looking all youthful and trendy (my language is even old!!!).

Alycat - it makes feel like a grumpy old woman too!

I can see that it is a short-lived attraction esp with us mums who are kept busy with lo.

I've just joined (I'm 32) and have noticed that just about everyone else on there is gorgeous and seems to be having a great time at a party or somewhere exotic judging by their photos. Will have to get busy with photoshop and mac myself (2 stone lighter) onto a lovely beach!
