to want a general election and not having boris Johnson running the country

I'm sorry if this has been done but I cannot stand boris Johnson. He is a laughing stock and cannot talk, he bumbles his way through a conversation and looks like he has been pulled through a hedge backwards.

We need a general election so WE get to decide who runs the country not someone that gets pick by the Tories

We do decide who runs the country - WE vote for parties and their policies not for leaders

The country not me ffs vote Tory - so that's what we get - they didn't vote for Cameron

Well looking at Gove's treatment of schools I think it is worrying what he would do with the economy.

I'd rather slit my wrists and jump into the taff than stay in a country that is run by that blonde buffoon...

You don't get to pick the Leaders of the Parties in a General Election.

What do you mean?

I don't care about his voice, hair or appearance. I do care that he's ruthless, untrustworthy and deeply unpleasant.

There should absolutely be a GE, but there can't be because the clever old Tories changed the rules on that to shore up the coalition.

Cameron has been a catastrophic fool.

I understand Gove is not looking to become pm so we should be able to avoid that. A positive side to this is that even if we do end up with Boris Johnson as PM, we can choose to vote him out at the next general election so we don't have to be stuck with him forever.

Oh please; not Borris Johnson or Gove to be prime minister. Oh no! Oh no...

Yes I'm very concerned about the school situation. Mine haven't started yet but it won't be long (ds1 starts next year)

I didn't vote for the tories either. I am a liberal - so not only disenfranchised here, but my European identity- which was very important to me - is being wiped away too.

Agreed - I really dislike him

I did vote leave (no I am not a racist anti immigrant type ) But even I was surprised that leave won given the combination of Farage and Johnson both being pretty dreadful

Think where Cameron went wrong was that he should have called the referendum and then remained outside of the debate and impartial - he chose to be v strongly and vocally in the remain camp as did Osbourne and effectively this has made it untenable for him to stay on in light of the leave decision.

Despite this I do believe being he is the best option for prime minister and to be fair the majority was pretty small so I think more a case of he played it wrong

It is a long time notgivingin789 and I am not saying it is ideal (I certainly don't want him in charge) but one of the arguments from the leave campaign is that they don't want some unelected person in Brussels making decisions for us that we as a country do not agree with. A remain vote would have resulted in that outcome for us indefinitely. A leave vote means we can change things that don't work by way of a general election.

"We do decide who runs the country - WE vote for parties and their policies not for leaders" in theory. But in practice most of us are influenced in terms of which party we vote for based on who is the leader of the party at the time.

One of the biggest reasons given for the labour defeat last time was the fact that Miliband just wasn't seen as a credible leader.

I'm sad to see Cameron going. I view him like Major, he's not a testosterone-fuelled gob, he's generally a calming influence.

The electorate are very unhappy at Labour.

Even with the 'blue on blue' in fighting opinion polls still show Tories way ahead.

Labour heartlands have just virtually all voted against the Labour Party and for leave.

Corbyn isn't liked amongst the larger Labour voters. There is a big difference in popularity amongst party members and those that actually vote Labour.

Only 32% of the country voted for the Conservatives. The amount of votes does not directly lead to the amount of seats won in parliament, otherwise UKIP would have won a great deal more in the last election.

And people do vote for the leader. I know legally that's not true but in reality it is.
