To think that blue badge spaces are for people with blue badges?

First of all I want to apologise to those people who were offended by the my use of a phrase which I will not, of course, repeat here. It was coined by a very wonderful disability rights campaigner in the 80s and was a tongue in cheek shot across the bows at all the negative labels that were in common use then to describe people with disabilities. Now...my point is that no one should use a disabled space without a blue badge. Is that BU? No one of course should challenge anyone with a blue badge . So I will say again that I was really really angry this morning for the second day running at the disabilist selfish entitled who were abusing these spaces at the station and I was upset that no one came to my support. I was actually trapped in my car by a van as I couldn't open the door to get out. I was going to work . Is it BU to mind that ? It happens over and over again and I am FUCKING fed up with it

Yanbu. Of course people shouldn't use disabled spaces if they aren't disabled.

My mum doesn't find this is a problem in our area. Most of her parking grief comes from other disabled people telling her she isn't disabled.

What you need to remember is that some people are dicks. The word being some not all.

Have you thought about photographing the offenders and creating a Facebook page to share them? Although there are some dedicated to sharing piss poor parking already.

I posted this on the mum and baby parking thread but this morning I parked in a disabled bay at the supermarket and displayed my blue badge.

I came back to find a twunt had parked half on the bay next to me and half across the chevrons making it damn near impossible for me to get into my car. They had no blue badge but did have a baby seat in the back.

I left a large note face up on the windscreen under the wipers reading:

DUE TO LACK OF BLUE BADGE
i ASSUME YOUR INABILITY TO
READ SIGNS AND PARK IN A BAY
ARE YOUR ONLY DISABILITIES!!!


I was so pissed off.

Then I got home and found that the local paper has run the story of our local council introducing the flat fee for disabled parking (£40 for three years) which I'm fine with, I've already applied and paid. But the comments underneath left me incensed. Why should disabled get free parking? Most of them are loaded anyway? It's discrimination if they get to park for free and I don't. I spent the rest of the morning angrily putting people right (and did actually get one man to change his view point).

I have a disabled space outside our house, yet again today I couldn't park in it because 2 cars decided it would be ok to park with their wheels in the space, leaving no room for my car. Not to mention the number of folk who park in it to nip to the tanning shop or corner shop. You are definitely not being unreasonable, blue badge holders need the spaces for a reason.

As I said on t'other thread YANBU. I couldn't park in one at the supermarket the other day because someone decided that a dog was more deserving of the spaces than a disabled person.

And don't get me started on the police car parked in the one outside my place of work today.

I did post a similar thread yesterday but it got deleted because I used an upsetting phrase. Yes a while tgread but there you go . I have tried everything to change this behaviour at the station but with limited success as you can see - photos on FB, Twitter, organised protests, MP, Councillors, Southern Rail , local press and radio (latter two were very supportive).

Some people are so ignorant about disabled parking spaces. They don't seem to be able to understand that if you have certain disabilities you need to be able to open the car door fully to get in and out do you need a bigger space. I had the rage last week when some helpful woman suggested that my FIL should "just park there, it's almost as close to the shop" poor bastard can barely get out of the car and falls so easily.

In 99% of cases I agree. But last December my son was hit by a lorry which meant he lost 5cm of bone. He is still in a cast now as the hospital are regrowing the bone. He should be out the cast and learning to walk again by november. AS it is less than a year he can't get a blue badge although he still spends a lot of time in a wheelchair. I have had to ask in shopping centres etc to use their blue badge spaces or he can't get out the car.

I wish someone would tell the arseholes who live near me that only BB holders can use disabled bays. They seem to think the residents disabled bay we've got for DS is a free-for-all and are very unpleasant when challenged.

We have exactly the same problem here Friolero, I've been yelling at my housing officer for 2 years over it. Doesn't help that she parks in them too (not mine though as she knows I'll kick off)

As tiggles says. 99% i agree but i am happy to exempt the 1% who are disabled but temporarily. My dad has cancer and its taking forever to get a badge but he cant walk more than a few steps. My mum is really struggling with parking for him

I am sick of people where I live parking in spaces without a badge! But not half as sick as people who regularly give me abuse for parking in a disabled bay with my blue badge because "I don't look disabled"

I only use a wheelchair when my condition is particularly bad (thankfully not all the time) but it's mortifying (and makes me very angry) when people shout at me for parking legally, apparently under 30 means your not disabled!

If people without a disabled badge want the parking space then they should spend a day in mine (and countless other disabled people's shoes) they'd soon find out extra room when parking isn't just nice but essential

for Tiggles and others who have temporary needs like this, i wouldnt care, i would however leave a note / or a photo of the person with the current issue as i think that most people would be ok with that. I dont know if that would help

If you came out of a car with a wheelchair, i wouldnt be checking for your blue badge, i would assume you have one already

My friend had a blue badge for a while, her health improved thankfully, and the glares she got when parking, because she 'looked' fine

I know with my DS (we dont have a badge, but we do get pip or dla or whatever the heck it is today) I would much rather have a DS without the disability than the extra 'perks' we get to help us! we wouldnt need the flipping 'perks' if we did nt have the disability- as my DH would be able to get a job outside the home, etc

Well so far there's been a deafening silence from those who reported my original thread to HQ and to whom I've apologised - so people who were so offended by the phrase I used think it's perfectly OK for me to have difficulties getting to work and would rather my thread was deleted? Sadly its only on roads that a trafic warden will ticket, not private property .
