AIBU?

to think dog/cat owning smokers are delusional?

"My house doesn't smell of dog and I only smoke at the window/door/up the chimney so it doesn't smell"

YES IT DOES!

Same with some cats - especially litter trays.

Just because you are used to the smell, doesn't mean it doesn't smell. Even if you spray everything in fabreeze it just smells like fabreeze with a hint of dog.

Smokers are delusional about the smell - I expect that smokers who own pets are doubly so. I agree with you, OP.

TheGMF · 31/01/2015 07:56

Everyone is used to the smell of their own house. How sure are you YOUR house doesn't smell?

ditavonteesed · 31/01/2015 07:58

it depends, my house smells of dog, so I clean it and the dogs and light a lot of scented candles and open windows a lot more than someone who doesnt have dogs. People often comment how lovely my house smells but I expect that I becasue they expect it to stink of dogs.

DropYourSword · 31/01/2015 08:00

I have plenty of friends with dogs. Their houses don't smell!

Maybe it's because I'm in Australia and we don't generally have lots of carpeted floors, which might trap hair, dirt and smell.

lightbulbsarehot · 31/01/2015 08:00

I didn't say mine doesn't smell of anything.

But smokers seem to always go on about how their houses smell fresh because they blow the smoke out a vent or something.

I like the 'some cats' quote.
I think the only time that the animal owner's house's don't smell is when they are very clean and disinfect /wash/ clean on a very regular basis.

Heavy smokers smell no matter what.

I hate the smell of smok. I also don't get people with pets who allow their animals everywhere and don't clean throughly.

londonrach · 31/01/2015 08:02

Of course people cant smell their own smell. I can smell a smoker in the street even if not smoking. The smell hangs around, even if not off their clothes the smells comes out of their skin. Anyone who says they dont smell of smoke is not aware how bad it smells. Id never tell someone even if a friend if you smelt smoke or animals. (Hope they dont complain of my smell). You also right about the animal smell. I bet my flat has a smell. (At the moment car as dh has bits of car everywhere.....grrrr). I dont smell it anymore (ok im kidding myself by over cleaning the kitchen and the toilet)

TheHappinessTrap · 31/01/2015 08:04

Are you angry with anyone in particular?

Hamiltoes · 31/01/2015 08:05

I remember when I quit smoking. About a week later I opened my wardrobe to get something and the smell hit me like a tonne of bricks!! I had never smelt it before. I put every item of clothing I owned in a big pile and it didn't go back in until it had been thoroughly boiled.

Now I am amazed at the things I can smell. Like shampoo on my hair the morning after I was it, incredible! Grin

curiousgeorgie · 31/01/2015 08:05

I have a dog and I smoke and my house doesn't smell.

I smoke outside and clean loads everyday, plus my dog gets sprayed with coconut spray.

What a nasty thread OP, anyone in particular you're trashing?

Wherediparkmybroom · 31/01/2015 08:06

If you don't like the way my house smells don't come in I have dogs, cats, two very smelly boys and we smoke plus my work clothes always have a lingering smell of fish about them.
My house, my smells, my rules. We Always have good cake though!

Longtalljosie · 31/01/2015 08:07

I expect my house smells very slightly of cat - but he's rarely in, especially in summer. When he was injured over new year and confined to the house, it really did smell of cat.

DropYourSword · 31/01/2015 08:09

Oooh curiousgeorgie, tell me more about the coconut spray!

PunkrockerGirl · 31/01/2015 08:13

Well yes, some houses do smell of smoke or pets. It doesn't affect me and it certainly wouldn't bother me enough to start a thread about it. Confused

Irelephant · 31/01/2015 08:15

Wow smoking and pet bashing all on one post.

How clever Biscuit

Toooldtobearsed · 31/01/2015 08:19

My friends mean more to me than any stray whiff.

I have dogs, I have no doubt my house smells, particularly in winter (the wet dog effect), do I give a toss? If people come to my home, they come to see me, not conduct a sniff test.

lightbulbsarehot · 31/01/2015 08:28

I am not necessarily complaining about the smell. It is the idea that they are so deluded they really can't imagine their house smells of it at all.

Even if you smoke outside you still smell of smoke!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 31/01/2015 08:29

Every home has a smell anyway whether it's a smokers or a pet owners or a single childless person. My neighbours don't smoke or have pets but I can't stand their smell. They don't stink or anything it's just a strong distinctive smell. We have cats and no one has ever said it smells whether they're just being polite lol. And when I smoked it was always outside but it defo lingers on clothes for ages

So?

betweenmarchandmay · 31/01/2015 08:35

I know plenty of non-smelly smokers and pet owners; I hate smoking by the way.

My cat poo outside don't use a litter tray. They have one for emergencies. If they poo in it, it smells. It also smells when I have a poo, or DH does. Sorry about that. Confused It's not so offensive it stenches the house out permanently.

I hate it when Mumsnet starts going on about smells. Deluded indeed.

WillWorkForMoney · 31/01/2015 08:37

I have a cat and a dog, i can smell the litter tray if I've forgot to change it even though its in the side house bit. Also i often ask guests if the house smells and they always say no, and i know they're not just being polite. If it smelt mil would tell me! (she only comes twice a year so is not "used to" it)

If you don't like the smell of pets and smokers don't go near them.

I have pets, no doubt my house smells a bit I don't actually care, my dogs curled up next to me just now, I quite like her smell.

Smokers do stink that's true.

Pipbin · 31/01/2015 08:40

All of us in the West smell of gone off milk.
I had heard that the Chinese and Japanese say this of us but I didn't believe it until I came back from Japan.
After a while away from people with milk featuring as heavily in their diet I can confirm that we all smell of gone off milk.

Just like we all have an accent, we all smell.

PunkrockerGirl · 31/01/2015 08:40

Yes the smell of smoke lingers on your clothes even if you smoke outside. Smokers know that. I don't know any smokers who are delusional enough to think otherwise.
