AIBU?

To think you can find the method of weight loss that suit you?

I have been doing the slim and save diet which is basically milk shakes, soups, etc. since October last year. I just got to target :) 10 stone, and I was 17 so pretty massive really!

But I am so sick of hearing people say oh you're going to put it all back in again now, even adding you do know that don't you Hmm then they say join slimming world or weight watchers or why don't you just exercise.

AIBU to think I'll do what suits me, and also that lots of diets result in people gaining weight they lost and it's what I do now that tells.

You lost 10 stone in 6 months? Wow! Well done! It's clearly worked for you! Who cares what anyone else thinks!

I think this sometimes. They don't go around saying to already-slim people that they're going to put weight on, so why is someone who loses weight rapidly going to put it straight on again? It is true that if you lose weight fast due to a strict diet regime that it's very difficult to maintain that regime once you've reached your target. That's when people give up and start eating more than they need to or quit exercising, and of course the weight goes back on. But if you just eat sensibly and burn more than or the same amount of calories as you take in, then you'll not have a problem.

Congratulations by the way, that's a great result!

Thank you! Grin I was very unhappy at 17 stone, I really don't ever want to go back there again.

YANBU. Those people seem to be trying to shit all over your achievement which is a bit bloody nasty.

I've lost just over 5 stone in 14 months. I have no intention of ever putting it back on and my head is in the right mindset now. I bet money FIL is already bitching behind my back about how I'll be fat again by Xmas.

Congratulations on your achievement. You are correct in saying that you should stick to what suits you as it has given the results you wanted. I think perhaps what people are trying to warn you about is that this diet of shakes and soups is not sustainable in the long term and that you need to have a strategy for maintaining your weight loss now all the hard work is done.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! How do you feel? Sod the nay-sayers, look after yourself, do what you think is right. Hang out with people whose company you enjoy. Life is too short for negative comments like that.

Congratulations to you and everyone else here that has lost the weight.

There is always someone who wants to piss on your parade and you'll usually find it's those people who are jealous and cant find it within themselves to be genuinely happy with others achievements and good fortune. They cant see the good in anything.

Stick 2 fingers up to them and do what you feel is right for you!!

In my experience people who lose massive amounts of weight in a short amount of time using meal replacement diets often do put it on again quite quickly.

I'm not saying that to be negative or a parade pisser but it does tend to be the case that once you start re-introducing solid food where before you'd just had a shake the pounds can accumulate quite quickly.

Well done to you, but maintenance is the real challenge when it comes to weight loss.

do you have to be on these shakes all your life now?

Report
ExitPursuedByABear · 01/05/2014 13:10

That is why 5:2 is so good. You can derail a bit and then jump back on it. And I choose to eat foods that I really enjoy.

Congratulations, thats an amazing weigh loss.

Now comes the hard bit, maintaining....you may want to think about exercise now.

Well done though :)

I agree with Squoosh. Sorry. Unless you're planning to stay on shakes for the rest of your life, the only way to maintain that weight loss is to seriously revamp the diet that caused you to put on weight in the first place.

MandarinCheesecake · 01/05/2014 13:21

yes squoosh I also agree with what you are saying. Some people do put all the weight back on after losing it quickly, with the operative word being some.

There is every chance that the op could put the weight back on, but there is also a good chance that she wont. Maintaining is of course the hardest part of weight loss but op has lost all this weight and I should imagine that she would like to be congratulated on her achievement rather than people telling her that she will pile it all back on before she's even stepped off the scales.

I'm sure she would like to be given a chance to prove that she can maintain first before people start pushing her achievement down into the gutter!

Congratulations to everyone here who has mentioned massive weight loss. I'm literally in awe!

I'm a massive glutton so dieting is really hard for me.

I did hear that after you've lost huge amount, your TDEE or amount you should eat a day is 15% lower for a while than a person who is of the same weight and always has been.

I think they're probably trying to 'help' but I can totally see why it would get annoying! Especially the 'you do know that, don't you?' Condescending ones

Well done again Grin

WELL DONE YOU!!!! That is absolutely amazing! You must feel brilliant!

People's negative comments must be incredibly frustrating when you have achieved so much. Just be sure though that you do have a plan, I think that is what people are getting at here. Your weightloss is amazing but how do you plan to get back into eating normal food...there are lots of options, maybe 5:2 would be a good way to maintain? DW and I are doing this and we are having great success and finding that because it isn't all day every day it has helped us achieve a balance. We have been doing it for 9 months now (had breaks for holidays etc) and have had no problems. Just a thought.

Massive congratulations to you!

Most people who use extreme diets do regain the weight they have lost. That's fact. But that's not the case for everyone, and I see no reason why you can't be one of the successful ones who keeps the weight off.

Most successful dieters are those who changed their eating habits for life, rather than following a short-term diet. But as long as you adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle once you've reached your target weight you'll be fine.

Well done on a terrific achievement. Flowers

Congratulations on losing that weight.

And I'm sorry that people are being negative.

But... what I think they mean (hopefully well-intentioned) is that the regime you have been following has not automatically taught you how to continue this amazingly-good work when you come off the diet and go back to eating 'normally', which I assume you intend to do rather than continuing to buy these specific products.

You will now have to develop a daily/weekly eating regime for yourself which has the kind of balanced, healthy, right-portion-sized eating that will allow you to maintain your weight.

Unfortunately, quite a lot of people fail at this stage, having put in so much great effort in losing the weight to begin with.

Congratulations on your weight loss, Still ! In my experience, it is much harder to maintain a healthy weight than it is to actually lose weight, and I guess this is what your "friends" have found too.

I suppose it depends on the reason why you got overweight in the first place. In my case, I "comfort eat", so I need to deal with that in some way. Any suggestions very welcome!

So you are absolutely right - it's whatever suits you that matters.

rinabean · 01/05/2014 13:44

Something like 95% of people do put it back on though, and many end up fatter than they were before. That's all kinds of diets whatever they're called (eating plans, lifestyles, whatever.) They're not attacking you personally.

I think it's more that by doing a shake/meal replacement, you're "on a diet" not "changing the way you eat forever" - so you'll still need to do some sort of healthy eating change to your general diet once you've stopped "being on a diet" or you will just pile it back on, as your 'normal' eating isn't healthy (or else you wouldn't have gained the weight in the first place).

This is where a lot of people fail, even with slimming world and weight watchers, they think of it as changing the way they eat in order to lose weight - something with a clear end point, not changing the way they eat for the rest of their lives.

OP - will you be buying the shakes and soups for the next 40+ years, or just until you reach your target weight? If just until you reach your target weight, then your friends are right, you need to have a plan in place to stop you just regaining it at that point.

LadyMud - I found I 'treated' myself with food - be it a cake with coffee when I went out, or some lovely blue cheese.

So I found other treats for myself. Rather than if I've walked up to our town centre (2 miles uphill pushing a buggy, knackering!) I used to then treat myself to a coffee and cake in a lovely coffee shop in town (undoing all the good work!), instead, I'd treat myself to going into the lovely independent book shop or the charity book shop and buy a book, and have that with a black coffee (giving up sugar in coffee was hard!). I'd treat myself with very good quality coffee, which drinking black had few calories. sometimes I'll treat myself to a new lipstick, or nail varnish, or a scarf, or a bargin DVD... Often this would end up about the same price or less than the coffee and cake option.

Finding out other things to give you 'comfort' when you are tempted to eat, is it evenings or in the day? Do you know what your triggers are?

Congratulations on your weight loss. Grin I agree with others that maybe these comments aren't personal. I know three people who've done liquid only diets, lost an incredible amount of weight quickly but put it back on when they went back to solids. But I'd never want any of my friends to fail.
