" Just marking my place.." WTF?

Why do people feel the need to go on a thread to "mark my place"? How does that contribute to the discussion underway? I get really annoyed by this action and it's the most pointless thing a poster can do. Why oh why?

Please someone enlighten me to the point of this 'marking of place' .To me it's rude, pointless and utterly unnecessary. I get the "bumping" of thread bit, but the marking of place, I don't get. To me it's self-indulgent, rude, and just plain attention-seeking! Why oh why?

If you are THAT interested why not just press 'Watch This Thread'

It keeps the thread on your page forever.

Beyond I do that too sometimes grin

If I want to placemark, I usually post something vaguely relevant just to write a post
I'm sneaky, me grin

Oblomov If you read my posts you would have find why I think it's bad taste to do that

Oh, I don't know then. I just use the ordinary site on an iPad if that helps at all.

QOD Tue 12-Feb-13 15:16:36

I can see it on my phone on the mobile ap but not I-pad
Tsk!

Oblomov Tue 12-Feb-13 13:41:07

I don't think its rude. I think the reasons why its done have been explained. what exactly is the problem with this? why does it bother you so much?
Beyond me.

I do think MNHQ could merge watching and on and make the watch button bigger, then less people would mark their place.

Sorry, forgot to check back!

I you touch the bottom right hand corner of a post the bookmark button will appear. Just tap it gain to save your place.

sometimes marking threads is useful.
I only use the words when it's funny or erudite.
sometimes on a sensitive post I'll post something because I want to know that the op is okay. and I can never find threads again - I also don't "watch" threads.

I don't know how to use it though! I can't see the word bookmark anywhere

What are the chances that the little darlings I teach will know what ODFOD means? I so want to say it the next time I get YOLO as a response...

QOD Now you're home and dry grin

Dryjuice25 Mon 11-Feb-13 20:58:54

PLLT not popular then, even*

Dryjuice25 Mon 11-Feb-13 20:57:36

PLLT not the thread not popular then?

QOD Mon 11-Feb-13 20:57:25

Ok, I've found that setting and set it to show bookmarks

Now what?

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 11-Feb-13 19:42:19

Can't remember who mentioned it up thread but the bookmark button works fine on iPads. Just go to the customise at the top.

I'm not keen on place marking tbh. It's not too bad if it's for the GF threads so you can see the deletion message, but other than that the "I'm watching" button is perfectly adequate IMO.

MechanicalTheatre Mon 11-Feb-13 19:31:57

Gosh, some of the stuff you lot get upset about!

GreatUncleEddie Mon 11-Feb-13 19:25:21

I think it's a bit crass. Just use the watch list if you have nothing to say, that's what it's for.

Tee2072 Mon 11-Feb-13 19:22:49

Oh, they are brilliant, Make. Usually something that ties in with what has happened on the thread.

makemineamalibuandpineapple Mon 11-Feb-13 19:02:26

What are the deletion explanations?

Tee2072 Mon 11-Feb-13 17:29:44

No it doesn't, if you haven't posted on the thread. Just putting a bookmark, with no post, does not put it in TIO.

And

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GetOrf Yes that's another one. My first though to that is; 'it's gonna be trivia' ha ha ha <hides>
