I think you might have to give a brief sanitised version of what it's about littlemiss, there's no way I'm clicking on something with animal cruelty in it.

OMFG.

Any ideas, anyone... please?

I wonder if there is a petition that can be sent to DEFRA anywhere? Will have a look.

It's a DM article about cruelty to pigs from what I saw - only had a peek.

Report
AgentZigzag · 29/07/2011 20:57

I saw something on the news earlier about two blokes manhandling some pigs, who were the blokes and why was CCTV set up to watch them does anyone know?

Just the short bit I saw was heartwrenching.

I don't know how to describe it without horrifying you AgentZigzag whilst also giving an accurate description of what is going on in this particular piggery, if that's what they are called.

It is the worst abuse of animals I have ever seen. Shock

Have had a hunt on Animal Aid's website and there are no suggestions for actions that could be taken in protest, so I have emailed them to ask if they plan on doing anything (such as an email campaign to DEFRA to try and change their minds on the prosecution thing). I'll let you know what they say.

The secret filming was set up by animal welfare campaigners, but I didn't see why and the govt wont prosecute!!!!!!!! Govt say this is because it was filmed secretly!!

Basically, it is some hidden camera footage from an abattoir, which shows outright cruelty to pigs, including pigs being beaten, being incorrectly stunned before being killed (and therefore dying in massive pain), having cigarettes stubbed out on their faces etc etc. DEFRA have however refused to prosecute saying that hidden cameras are not good enough evidence to take to court. Which isn't true - look at the Bristol care home case.

I've also posted the link as my Facebook status (yes, I know, I have a FB profile - shoot me now!). I used to work for an animal charity and know quite a lot of people who will be very upset and concerned, and up for taking action. So if Animal Aid get back to me I should be able to tell them that I suspect that I can generate a decent amount of support to get them started.

I knew about this, it's not the first time and sadly I bet it won't be the last.

What can you do? Stop eating meat and animal products.

It's a simple choice - a vegetarian/vegan diet or condoning the abuse and murder you've seen there.

Report
AgentZigzag · 29/07/2011 21:12

Like cruelty to children, it's not that I don't think people should be horrified, they should be, but I'll end up with it going round and round my head and powerless to stop it there/then.

Sad

Angry

With you all the way, BabyBy, I'm about to post it amongst my AR and rescue pals too.

While I think there will be a lot who agree with you, DBF, there will be those who don't wish to give up eating meat but still don't want to see the animals suffer needless cruelty. Any campaign needs to make sure it doesn't alienate these people and so dilute itself (if you see what I mean). I'm not criticising your point of view in the slightest, please don't see it as an attack, but would be wary of being too dogmatic about people becoming vegetarian - I just don't think for a lot of people it would happen.

DEFRA's assertion that there won't be any chance of a successful conviction due to the nature of the evidence (hidden camera footgae) is ludicrous. Anyone and everyone can join in a public pressure campaign to change this situation and make sure that if people are going to eat meat, the animals get decently treated first. Which isn't too much to ask. Just because they are going for food doesn't mean their life, even the last few seconds of it, has to be one of pain.

It's appalling that the people in this video arnt charged in some way. I will still eat meat, but believe animals should be treated with kindness until their end.

schomberg · 30/07/2011 10:12

Unpleasant to see but it tastes the same to me.

Report
babybythesea · 30/07/2011 10:16

I'm sure it does schomberg - but it's not about you, really, is it?
It's ablut making sure that something else doesn't suffer when it really doesn't have to. You'd still get to eat it, it's just the animal would get to avoid having cigarettes stubbed out on it's face first. All we're really looking for is a bit of empathy. If you don't have it, keep quiet as lacking empathy really isn't something to be proud of.

I'm not vegetarian but this is repulsive behaviour - The Animal Health & Welfare Act is supposed to stop these kinds of things happening Angry

Remember to not just contact DEFRA, if you're in Scotland you need to contact the Scottish Government...Animal Health etc is devolved

Letters to your MP are effective, your MP will write to the Minister responsible for DEFRA and if you are in Scotland make sure you write to both your MP and to your MSP (similar for Wales)

What babybythesea said. It's a well known fact that animals taste nice to most people. It's also a fact that they suffer pain and fear in exactly the same way that we do. It's a measure of us as people that we don't hurt other living beings, be they animals, children or people with dementia or learning difficulties in a care home. We have the power to cause as much harm and distress to others as we want to, or to let others do it in our name. Most of us don't because it is abhorrent. If you believe it is fine to ill treat anything or anyone who can be hurt or frightened then what you are saying about yourself and society?

Report
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/07/2011 10:43

the problem is that, as far as I know, evidence gained by illegal means is inadmissible in court. The people who installed the hidden cameras trespassed to do so. In the care home case those filming were there legitimately.
