DS (16 months) has a severe egg allergy. I can manage this no problem at all when we are at home because I cook most things from scratch and have the packaging for other stuff on hand to check if they contain egg or not. I was however pretty surprised to see egg listed in the ingredients of sliced turkey, gravy granules and pate amongst other things. These are foods that I would have confidently chosen for him to eat if we were eating out but obviously they would not have been good choices!!
Which other foods have you been surprised to find egg in?
A well meaning Aunt gave ds a selection box for Christmas and there were even eggs in some of the chocolate bars (not that I would have given him chocolate of course) so I had to eat them for him, shame eh?

lots of vege food has egg in, like quorn and tescos vege burgers. pies and scones are often glazed w egg (but linda macartney country pies and sos rolls are ok)um, fresh pasta or dried lasagne (except the really cheap ones). Any food labelled suitable for vegans (all coop own stuff is labelled) will be fine.

Not surprising, per se, but I noticed in M&S today that their doughnuts now contain egg. New recipe apparently.

DD2 has a milk allergy so we have to be really careful reading labels too. M&S is very good with allergy labelling. the thing is, you have to be constantly on your guard because sometimes manufacturers change recipes. Just when you think yo've found something safe, they go and change the recipe

M&S do some soft brown rolls that contain egg. Seem to remember that heinz spaghetti hoops changed the recipe recently and are now labelled "may contain traces of egg".

It really is a minefield isn't it. I'm beginning to think that it would be easier just to bring food for ds if we were eating out. I am terrified that even a filled roll might be contaminated with (eg) mayo or something might have an egg wash on the top.
How are the "family friendly" places like Brewsters etc with regard to allergy awareness?

I don't know if any contain egg but McDonalds are evry good at labelling their food. I know its junk but when you're away from home it is at least safe junk.

Thanks tatt. I have looked at McDonalds website and eventually found the bit where they list all the allergens in each product. Seems that chicken McNuggets and filet o fish contain egg, but I am not too surprised at that. And of course there are all the usual suspects such as muffins and pancakes and all the burgers that have mayo on them.
I suppose a little bit more salt and fat than I would usually give ds is a small price to pay in exchange for knowing that he's not going to eat some egg.
here's the link if anyone is interested it takes a moment to load

Brewsters are really good re allergies they have a little folder that has everything listed and if there is any egg or any other allergen in them. Ds has a severe egg allergy and we have eaten at brewsters twice once he had mini sausage and mash no gravy and the tomato pasta.

Lemon curd shocked me and also be careful of chips Ds had a really bad reaction to them as they were contaminated in the fryer.

Hi chlochlo. You are right about chips. ds's cousin also had this allergy (outgrew age 8) and he reacted if his food was fried in the same oil as an egg. Lemon curd I knew about because I've made it myself before. Thanks for the tip about Brewsters.
