Best board game for adults?

I've got my SIL in our family secret Santa. She's quite a difficult person to buy for as she doesn't like chocolate, smellies, make up, etc. So I thought a board game would be good.

So can anyone recommend one? I'm after one that won't take too long to play one game really.

Ticket to ride is a good one, most people like it. Or indigo perhaps?

Does your SIL play a lot of board games already? And how many people (of what age) will she have around to play with?

Articulate is an oldie, but good for all the family if you like word games.
Ticket to Ride is a great game, but might be daunting if she's not used to the Euro game style.
Perudo - another oldie, uses dice not a board, but a good laugh
Castle Panic - a co-operative game that's good for age 9+ but still fun for adults
Kill Doctor Lucky - if she likes Cluedo, this is a sort of reverse version of this where you're trying to kill the main character

(I love board games)

I've never heard of her playing a board game. She's not from the uk, English isn't her first language. She would mostly be playing it with her partner.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I had thought ticket to ride might be a good one.

Balderdash
Labyrinth
Scrabble
Cluedo

I hated ticket to ride and Scotland ride. Too laborious and too confusing.

I have bought my DH ticket to ride purely from this board

What about getting her a jigsaw if she doesn't do board games. I speak from bitter experience that most board games played with only two players are not good Xmas Sad

Actually a jigsaw is a good idea Smile I've seen jigsaws in her house.

Settlers? Carcasson? Dixit? Patchwork? What kind of games does she already play?

If she likes jigsaws then a wasgij might be fun.

Timeline is almost not even a game, it's maybe more like a quiz, but it's great for any number of people, quick as you like and easy to play with friends who don't know the rules.

They do some brilliant 3d jigsaws.
